6月17日发布的最新版本半年度排名显示，中国国防科技大学研制的天河二号计算机的
速度为每秒33.86千万亿次浮点运算，是上一届世界冠军——由美国和德国的超级计算
机研究团队研制的“泰坦”超级计算机速度的将近2倍。
《科学》杂志报道称，2010年11月，天河一号在世界超级计算机500强中位居第一，数
月后被日本的名为“京”的超级计算机挤下了冠军宝座。美国田纳西大学的计算机科学
家JackDongarra认为，中国的第二次登顶证明其对高性能计算技术进行着持续的支持和
资助。
据《科学》杂志介绍，美国有252个系统位列世界超级计算机500强，仍然是整个领域中
的领袖。中国拥有66个系统，位于第二。前6名中还包括日本、英国、法国和德国，分
别有30个、29个、23个和19个系统位列500强。
不过，Dongarra和其他科学家认为，美国的领导地位可能会下滑。天河二号的研制使用

The semiannual TOP500 listing of theworld's fastest supercomputers released Monday says the Tianhe-2developed by the National University of Defense Technology in centralChina's Changsha city is capable of sustainedcomputing of 33.86 petaflops per second. That's the equivalent of 33,860trillion calculations per second.
The Tianhe-2, which means Milky Way-2,knocks the U.S. Energy Department's
Titan machine off the No. 1 spot. Itachieved 17.59 petaflops per second.
Supercomputers are used for complexwork such as modeling weather systems,
simulating nuclear explosions anddesigning jetliners.
It's the second time a Chinesecomputer has been named the world's fastest.
In November 2010, theTianhe-2's predecessor, Tianhe-1A, had that honor
before Japan's K computer overtook it a few monthslater on the TOP500 list,
a ranking curated by three computer scientists atuniversities in the U.S.
andGermany.
The Tianhe-2 shows how China is leveraging rapid economic growth andsharp
increases in research spending to join the United States, Europe and Japan
in the global technologyelite.
"Most of the features of thesystem were developed in China,and they are only
using Intel for the main compute part," TOP500 editorJack Dongarra, who
toured the Tianhe-2 facility in May, said in a news release."That is, the
interconnect, operating system, front-end processors andsoftware are mainly
Chinese."

Why can't the US do this anymore? Answer: Noemphasis on science and
engineering. I went to a graduation at OSU about amonth ago and most of the
Phds. in science/engineering/math were not Americanstudents.

It's just back and forth. In 2008 China knocked the US for the fastest
supercomputer.Then the US department ofEnergy's Titan knocked China's.And
now Chinahas the fastest again. and So forth. It's nothing to be jealous
about. It'scalled progression of technology, and it's good to have
competition. It makesit faster for to zoom forward into the future if you
have good competition.

A number of years ago when my son wasworking on his PhD, he was the only
American in his research lab. All theothers were Chinese except for one who
was from the Middle East. I have been working with MIT for a number of
months now toreplace some equipment in one of their research buildings and I
see asignificant percentage of their graduate students are Asian. It
appears to methat they are far more focused on education in the sciences
than the US.

The jealousy in the comments is laughable. China had theworld's fastest
supercomputer back in 2008, they have it again now. It is toprove
technological capabilities of China.

When I was in Engineering school 30 yearsago most of the graduate students
were Chinese and Iranian. They took theirAmerican education and ran back
home with it. This computer is no surprise.1

Get used to it, as long as the US thinksbombing 3rd world countries further
