Teen 'knockout game' continues to harm innocent people
The worrying 'game' is played by choosing victims at random and trying to
knock them to the ground with one punch. More and more people report being
victimized by its callous 'players.'
This disturbing game is a hit with goons.
"Knockout" is an emerging trend among unhinged teens that consists of
targeting a passerby at random and trying to lay them out with one punch.
That's it.
Participants call this — the game's singular move — the "one hitter
quitter."
Their victims can be anyone: elderly men or mothers with kids are not exempt
. This poor attempt at manliness — i.e. thinly veiled cowardice — has even
ended in death.
Most of the knockout incidents have taken place in the New York metro area.
New York-based CBS 2 shed light on the fisticuff fad earlier this month with
a report on the twisted game in Jersey City.
"You just knock them out. You hit them with a blow and you take their
belongings," one teen told the station.
Another youngster said that people participate simply "for the fun of it."
But another said wannabe tough guys are interested in whether their friends
actually have the strength to strike somebody down.
Phoebe Connolly, of Vermont, told ABC affiliate WJLA that she was targeted
while riding her bike in the Columbia Heights section of Washington, D.C.
"My whole head went flying to the side… it was a hard punch," Connolly said
. "One kid came from the side and pretty much cut me off. He threw a hook
with his left hand and got me right in the face and he said, 'Wapow!'"
This month, New York police have been investigating whether attacked-Jews in
Crown Heights were victims of anti-Semitic hate crimes or knockout, as the
Daily News previously reported.
Back in September, a New Jersey man, 46-year-old Ralph Santiago, was found
dead with a broken neck and his head between two fence spikes in Hoboken,
the Jersey Journal said. Some suspect he was a victim of the warped game.
Hoang Nguyen, 72, of St. Louis, died from knockout while walking home from a
store in April 2011, according to the St. Louis Patch-Dispatch.
The Missouri paper reported that the attacker, 20 year-old Elex Murphy, was
convicted of second-degree murder, first-degree assault and armed criminal
action. He was sentenced to 55 years in prison.
But many other knockout "players" have dodged the law and could even be
planning to play again.

很多小黑已经彻底丧心病狂：
"It was just a little game," says Jason. "We used to walk to where a lot of
people be at and hit 'em. If one of the homeboys didn't knock him out, then
the other would come. Whoever knock him out would be king."
The rules of Knockout King are straightforward, according to Jason and other
former players interviewed for this article. A lead attacker is chosen from
among a group of boys, usually young adolescents. Next a target is picked
out. Then the attacker either charges the unsuspecting victim or motions for
his attention. When the target turns or lifts his head, the attacker
strikes. If the victim is felled by the punch, the group usually scatters.
But if the target withstands the blow, other members of the group may follow
up with their fists to finish the job. "Some people kick, but I ain't used
to kick," says Jason. "I just punched."
Jason says he began playing when he was about eleven and that his group once
knocked out five people in one night. Did victims ever lose consciousness?
"Probably," he concedes. "I would think about it afterward, but then the
thoughts go away, like it never happened."
For some victims of the assaults, the memories eventually fade away as well.
Others find it harder to forget.
Harder for 80-year-old Rafael Quiroz, who was hit on the back of his head
last year while standing on a corner of Michigan Avenue in broad daylight.
The blow knocked him to the ground and bloodied him. "Physically he's OK now
, but mentally he won't go on walks like he used to," says Quiroz's
granddaughter, Lucy Rosales.
Harder for John Stuhlman, 36, who was hit in the head last year while
walking home from work, leaving him with dizzy spells that persisted for two
weeks. "I freaked out and took off down the street, and he tried to chase
me," recalls Stuhlman, who now avoids walking the streets late at night. "He
was upset because I didn't fall down. He even said something like, "I hit
you, and you fall down.'"
Harder for John Henry Muhrer, 35, who was assaulted by a group of kids in
near Tower Grove Park a few years ago. The lead attacker distracted him by
tossing a small bike in his path, then swooped in. "He hit me pretty hard,"
says Muhrer. "Never saw it coming."

Tiffany Thompson got her wish: Demetrius Murphy met the “Right Person” and
he will not be playing the Knockout Game any more. Ever.
A St. Louis homeowner shot Murphy dead late last week during a burglary. And
a whole lot of people in St. Louis feel relieved, if not safer.
Murphy was a member of a group that is credited with making the Knockout
Game a St. Louis tradition, then a national pasttime.
The rules of the Knockout Game are simple: Begin with a bunch of black
people. Anywhere from three to 30.
Find a white person, but an Asian will do. Alone is important. Older is
better. Weak and defenseless even more so.
Without warning, punch that person in the face as hard as you can. You win
if you score a Knockout.
If not, keep punching until your arms and legs get too tired to continue. Or
the person dies.
You can play anywhere, but “vibrant and culturally mixed” neighborhoods
are probably the best. That is where the victims are: Asians, “gays,”
artists, yuppies, seniors , college students – people who won’t fight back.
Over the last two years, hundreds of people around the country have become
victims. Some say over 100 in St. Louis alone. Some died. Others, like
Murphy’s victim Matt Quain, suffered broken bones in his face and jaw.
Last week, four members of the national Championship Alabama football team
were arrested after three played the game two times, and the fourth tried to
use a debit card taken during the attacks.
Many of these cases of black mob violence are documented in the book “White
Girl Bleed a Lot: The return racial violence and how the media ignore it.”
Murphy and his friends were arrested in November 2011 when police found a 13
-year-old girl who witnessed the Knockout Game assault on Quain. The charges
were dismissed after she failed to show up. The mayor of St. Louis said
there was no doubt in his mind the witness was intimidated and too
frightened to testify. The mother of the witness said the same several
months later.

One woman was punched in the face as she crested a hill on her bicycle in
Northwest Washington. Another was hit in the back of the head as she walked
to a bus stop. Neither was robbed, and after one attack, the young men
laughed as they made their escape.
D.C. police say the recent attacks in Columbia Heights may be part of a
disturbing trend that assailants across the country call the “knockout game
.” Youths challenge one another to knock out a random person with a single
punch.
The Internet is giving attackers bragging rights far beyond their circle of
friends or even their neighborhoods. One particularly brutal video from New
Jersey showing a young man hitting a woman from behind, sending her face
first to the pavement, has a half-million views on YouTube. In recent years,
such attacks have turned deadly in St. Louis and Upstate New York.
“Regardless if you call it the knockout game or not, it’s a senseless act,
” said Phoebe Connelly, 32, who was attacked Saturday night as she rode her
bike on 11th Street NW. The Vermont resident visits the District often for
her job, which involves running youth leadership programs.
“I’m less concerned with what you call it as long as it stops and it doesn
’t happen to someone else,” she said.
Another woman said she was walking south on 14th Street on the evening of
Nov. 14 when she heard a group of youths behind her on bikes, laughing and
joking. One struck her on the back of her head as they rode past.
“I don’t know if it’s part of a pattern or isolated,” said the 27-year-
old woman, who did not want to be named because she is a crime victim. “
They may not be connected, but it’s certainly happening. There is no doubt
in my mind that it was intentional. This was a fist put squarely to the back
of my head.”
Youngsters interviewed in Columbia Heights said they knew about the knockout
game from the simulation video game “Grand Theft Auto,” in which players
build a criminal empire and assume roles of thugs who can carjack drivers,
shoot people, pick up prostitutes and randomly knock people to the ground.
One 10-year-old boy said he recently punched someone on a $20 dare but
failed to knock the victim to the ground. “Me and my friends were hanging
out and they asked me if I had done one,” the boy said. “And I said I don
’t know how to play, so [they] explained it to me.”
A 15-year-old charter school student said that in “Grand Theft Auto,” “
you can just run up to people, and you can just like hit them and they’ll
just like fall. It looks kind of funny in the game.” She said she wouldn’t
do it in real life.
Fernanda Leiba, 21, a senior at Bell Multicultural High School, said she
just heard of the knockout game in classes this week. “I think it’s not
funny because people are getting hurt,” she said. “What if someone does it
to me?”
D.C. police declined to be interviewed on the topic. But in a statement, the
department’s chief spokeswoman, Gwendolyn Crump, made reference to the two
Columbia Heights assaults when asked about recent attacks that appear to
fit the pattern of the knockout game.
Crump noted that neither victim was knocked out, and she said at least one
of the incidents “appeared to be unprovoked.” No arrests have been made in
either attack. Authorities in other jurisdictions are also aware of the
knockout game, but police in Northern Virginia and in Prince George’s and
Montgomery counties said they have not received reports of any such attacks.
The knockout game has been listed as a motive in attacks this year in New
Jersey and New York, including several that police said targeted Jews in
Brooklyn and have been labeled hate crimes.
In St. Louis, a 72-year-old man died after being punched to the ground in
2011, and this year his attacker, at age 20, was sentenced to 55 years in
prison. In Syracuse, N.Y., two boys, ages 13 and 15, were arrested this year
in the killing of a 51-year-old man, and each was sentenced to 18 months of
confinement.
News media reports show other fatal incidents dating to at least 1992, when
a young man was killed in Massachusetts. While the name appears to have
stuck through the years, authorities think the crime is seeing a resurgence,
possibly driven by the Internet.
Offenders will “probably watch YouTube for weeks and months after an attack
and compete with each other to see who gets to the top of the list of page
views,” said criminologist Jeffrey Butts, director of the Research and
Evaluation Center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. “Now
, not only can you tell your friends about it, you can post it on video.”
Butts said a friend of his was attacked in a similar way in the late 1990s
in a Metro station. “Kids came up behind him, hit him in the head and just
took off,” he said. “No property was taken. It was just the thrill of
hitting somebody and running away.”
That appears to be the only motive in the recent attacks in the District.
Connolly said she was on her bike headed up 11th Street about 7:40 p.m.
Saturday when she saw a group of kids at the top of a hill, all on bikes.
They had pulled to the right of a bike lane — five on one side, two on the
other. “I had to bike through them,” she said. One then turned toward her
and rode by. “He reached out and punched me in the face,” she said.
Connolly didn’t fall down and kept riding. She called police but initially
didn’t want to file a report. But she called police back the next day after
hearing about the “game” and that another woman had been attacked two
days earlier. “It sounded very similar to mine,” she said.
The woman attacked on Nov. 14 said she was walking along 14th Street, near
Fairmont Street, when young men on bikes came up behind her. One punched her
in the back of the head. “I heard them coming up, laughing and talking,”
she said. “It’s not uncommon. Usually I just walk straight and they go
around. They kept laughing as they went by.” The group numbered between
eight and 10, according to police.
The woman works for a nonprofit group and has lived in the District for the
past nine years. She said it took a few days before she was willing to go
out alone again after dark.
Connolly said she has now watched videos of attacks on the Internet and “
was pretty speechless.”
“I believe in the betterment of people,” she said. “I’m assuming that
people who do this don’t realize that they can kill someone.”
But Connolly said she has no plans to use her experience while teaching
teens as part of their leadership studies. “I don’t think this is the best
example of being a teenager,” she said. “I generally find teens pretty
incredible people. I’m not going to draw conclusions based on one incident
that happened to me.”

Dread about being singled out for attacks has taken root in Jewish
communities in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Crown Heights, Borough Park and
Midwood, according to Dov Hikind, a state assemblyman.
Two weeks ago, a 78-year-old woman in Brooklyn reported being punched in the
head, with her assailant fleeing without touching her shopping bags or her
pocketbook.
This followed sporadic reports of similar recent attacks in Crown Heights,
Mr. Hikind said, including one on a 19-year-old Hasidic man who said he had
been approached by eight men and then punched in the face by one of them, in
what the police said was a possible hate crime.
Then, at 2:45 a.m. on Friday, on the border of Borough Park, a 24-year-old
man found himself suddenly boxed in by three men and punched by a fourth.
Police said the four men had been out celebrating and were “somewhat
intoxicated.” Mr. Kelly said the victim overheard the group discussing “
how you knock somebody out.” (Amrit Marajh, 28, of Brooklyn, was charged
with assault and with aggravated harassment as a hate crime.)

Photography intern Israel Blizovsky had just finished taking pictures at a
Crown Heights engagement party when a hulking teen he was passing on the
sidewalk cold-cocked him without warning.
“He was very strong. I was in shock,” said the 19-year-old from Beersheva,
Israel. “I saw a large group of black teenagers coming. I moved to the
side to let them pass. Then, all of a sudden, when I was passing right next
to them, I felt a punch in the face.
“They just kept walking. They were all laughing,” he told The Post through
a Hebrew translator. “They said something right after he punched me, but I
don’t understand English. It looked like they were making fun of me.”
Blizovsky, whose tooth was chipped by the blow, is one of at least six
Jewish people who have been attacked as part of a “knockout game” in the
three weeks leading to the start of Hanukkah Wednesday, Brooklyn leaders
said.
The brutal game — sometimes called “polar bear hunting” — has been on

Blizovsky, who stands 5-foot-2 and weighs less than 100 pounds, was working
for the COLlive community-news Web site and carrying a Nikon D600 camera
when he was assaulted on Crown Street Nov. 14 at 9:30 p.m.
The gang, he said, ignored his expensive equipment.
“They didn’t look deprived,” Blizovsky said. “They didn’t look poor.
They just looked like they wanted entertainment.”
Asked why he thinks he was targeted, he said: “[Jews] look gentle. We look
like we won’t fight back.”
Local rabbis, witnesses and victims say there have been at least eight
unprovoked attacks on Jews in Crown Heights, Midwood and Borough Park since
Oct. 11, with six after Nov. 6.
Early Friday, an Orthodox Jew was jumped by four thugs after he heard them
yapping about “knockout.”
“One of them stepped out towards me and, with a closed fist, hits me in the
face,” said Shmuel Perl, 24.
“As I was able to walk away from them, they called after me, ‘Come back. I
can do this. I will knock you out.’ ”
One man was arrested on charges of assault and aggravated harassment as bias
crimes in the attack.
On Nov. 9, a 78-year-old Midwood woman was socked in the back of the head
while pushing her great-granddaughter’s stroller on Avenue L and East Fifth
Street. Fearing a repeat, she hasn’t left her home since.
“It’s scary,” her son-in-law said. “You’re 78, and someone hits you
with a closed fist with all their might.”
In Brooklyn, religious Jews appear to be the targets.

As for Blizovsky, who returns to Israel Monday, he vowed to be “more
prepared” for his next visit to the Big Apple.
“I’ll bring a Taser.”
