equally emphasize border security and dealing with undocumented workers
already in the country, according to a new poll released Monday.
The Gallup poll shows that 43 percent of those surveyed say securing the
border is “extremely important” while 44 percent attach the same
importance to dealing with the the status of undocumented immigrants in the
country.
In earlier surveys, respondents were more likely to rate border security as
extremely important than dealing with illegal immigrants, Gallup said.
The new trend is largely driven by a decrease in the number of Americans
concerned with border security across both major political parties. While 56
percent of Republicans still see securing the borders as extremely
important, that number is down from 68 percent in 2011. For their part, 31
percent of Democrats agree that increasing border security is extremely
important, down from 42 percent in 2011.
Meanwhile, the poll found Democrats and Republicans are predictably split on
their priorities; while Democrats place a greater importance on dealing
with undocumented immigrants, 59 percent to 40 percent, a majority of
Republicans, 55 percent to 42 percent, say that securing the border is their
top priority.
The survey of 1,023 adults was conducted Feb. 6 to Feb. 9 and has a margin
of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
