My US citizen boyfriend who is a software engineer with a MS in Computer
Science is unable to get a job in his field. Is it because he is being
undermined by people on H1B's?

Very likely.
I am a recent CS graduate (Indian) who got placed in a top American firm
with a 6 figure salary package. I graduated from one of the top 50
universities in the US and until last month, I have been searching for
software related jobs. From my experience, I can definitely say that there
are only a few jobs in the software industry that mandates a citizenship or
green card status (other than federal jobs). So, apparently, your boy friend
is competing with thousands of Indian students (also Chinese), who have
similar qualifications.
Now I will tell you what advantages, we have over your boyfriend. There are
two types of Indian students coming to the US for higher studies: 1) People
like me, who are pure researchers/technical person, who come to the US to
learn and work on cutting edge technologies. 2) Indian upper middle class,
who want to live their American dream. These two categories constitute about
95% of the Indian students in the US. First category students usually get
admitted to top universities and easily find jobs or pursue their research.
The second category, is a bit more careful as their ultimate goal is to land
a job in the US (rather than higher studies). They work for 3 to 4 years in
software companies in India and gain some experience. Later they apply for
admissions in US universities.
Getting an admission in a 3rd tier US university is a cake walk for any
Indian student (GRE coaching centers in India target such students). Unlike
India, recruiters in the US seldom care the quality of the university they
graduated and hence every student get a fair chance to get interviewed for
various software positions.
Read my answer here: Anonymous' answer to I see average students from
ordinary universities in India pursuing Master's of Science degrees in the
US, and after graduation, they get jobs in top companies like Amazon and
Microsoft. What job profiles are they offered by these companies?
Now your boyfriend (probably a college fresher) is competing with an Indian
guy with 3 to 4 years of experience for an entry level position. An average
Indian graduate student targets only around 65k to 75k initial package. Also
, I have seen that huge number of the Indian students in the US finding it
difficult to get a job due to their lack of basic subject knowledge.
Consultancy firms are their guardian angels (Don’t even get me started how
consultancy firms exploit (cheat) these students, companies and immigration
policies to get them placed). Indian graduate students in the US are in
constant panic mode as they have only 3 to 4 month window (OPT period) after
graduation to find a job. So they work hard and prepare well for interviews
and technical tests. So during placement season, they are ready to
demonstrate their skills. I think Cracking the coding interview by Gayle
Laakmann McDowell is popular than the Harry Potter series among Indian CS
students :)
Now, leave the H1 visa and look into L1 category. That’s the most abused
visa category. And yeah, L1 comes with privileges for L1 dependents to work
in the US (don’t forget most Indian wives are fluent in C++ or Java)! Now I
see some lethargic BS Indian managers from companies like TCS, CTS etc.
filing green card under extra ordinary skilled alien category (if you know
about EB1C and its abuse). Some companies even send employees on business
visa (B1/B2) to work onsite [1].
Bottom line is, rather than blaming H1B visa and jobs being taken by Indians
, convince your congressmen to fix the loop holes in the system. |
