The Daly City man who lit a fire at the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco
in 2014, and told investigators he was egged on by voices inside his head,
was sentenced to 35 months in prison and three years of supervised release,
federal prosecutors said Thursday.
After pleading guilty Sept. 14, Yan Feng, 42, was sentenced by Judge Maxine
Chesney in a San Francisco federal courtroom Wednesday, according to the U.S
. District Attorney for the Northern District of California.
Though Feng was originally charged with arson and violence to a foreign
official, he pleaded guilty to the latter charge only as a result of the
plea deal.
Feng admitted starting a fire at the Chinese Consulate at Geary Boulevard
and Laguna Street in the Western Addition neighborhood, according to a plea
agreement and court records.
Two days after setting the blaze, federal investigators with the FBI said
Feng, a native of China who has permanent resident status in the United
States, called Daly City police through a Mandarin interpreter and told them
that he had “made the fire.”
He admitted taking three gasoline-filled containers to the consulate and
setting one of them on fire in the evening of Jan. 1, charring the doorway
to the building — but not injuring anyone.
The arson, which was captured by surveillance cameras, led Chinese
government officials to urge the United States for better protection of
their diplomats across the county. |
