US President Donald Trump wants Japan to do more in the bilateral
relationship.
Trump tweeted before leaving for New York where he will have a Sunday dinner
meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who is there for the UN
General Assembly.
Trump posted on Twitter that he "will talk military and trade" with Abe. He
tweeted that the United States has done much to help Japan and that he would
like to see more of a reciprocal relationship.
Trump previously demanded Japan pay more to maintain the US military
presence in the country. He has also shown strong interest in the further
opening of Japanese markets.
Trump wants tariff reductions on US agricultural products and a review of
the non-tariff barriers in the Japanese auto-market.
Observers say Trump seeks tangible results toward reducing the US-Japan
trade deficit as the mid-term elections draw near.
