York-Northern New Jersey region. Strong job growth in New York City and
moderate job growth in Northern New Jersey have pushed unemployment in the
region to record lows. In New York City, unemployment has fallen to a record
low of 4% and unemployment is at similarly low levels in surrounding areas.
The labor market has also tightened in upstate New York—not because of job
growth, but because of a declining labor force. In effect, as labor markets
have tightened, the region is experiencing an uptick in wage growth. (
