Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry
Postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the Zhu group at
Department of Chemistry, University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), to develop
small molecule drug candidates of novel actions for targeted cancer and
cardiovascular disease therapies. The Zhu Group website is: http://science.utep.edu/zhu/ .
Dr. Yaoqiu Zhu got his Ph.D. with Professor Richard Silverman (inventor of
Pfizer's blockbuster drug Lyrica) in Northwestern University. He then joined
Abbott Laboratories as a medicinal chemistry research scientist and made
direct contributions to the recently launched HCV drug Viekira Pak. After
resigned from Abbott, he founded his own research laboratory and published a
series of independent papers on major ACS journals about the clinical
drawbacks of the cardiovascular blockbuster drug Plavix and developed novel
drug candidates. Recently Dr. Zhu started his new career as an assistant
professor at UTEP, focusing on developing new methodologies for biomedical
research and drug discovery.
The Zhu group is seeking highly motivated synthetic medicinal chemistry post
-doc to join the new laboratory. The Zhu Group research covers medicinal
chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, biochemical pharmacology, structural
biochemistry, computer modeling, biological assays and animal studies, ADEM/
PK/Tox tests, etc. The major therapeutic focuses are cancer and
cardiovascular diseases. The successful candidate will be involved in the
design and synthesis of small molecule drug candidates with novel action
modes for targeted and personalized treatments. The duties will include
design and synthesis of new analogues of established leads to develop
biologically active compounds for testing in in vitro systems and in animals.
The candidate must be proficient in designing synthetic routes and solving
challenging problems in multi-step synthesis. The candidate also needs to
have medicinal chemistry knowledge including: ligand-receptor interactions
such as reversible kinetics and irreversible modification, structure-based
drug design, SAR exploration, parallel and library synthesis, computer
modeling, biological tests including cell line assay and in vivo studies,
etc.
