“Dear Editor,
African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious disease manifesting
clinical symptoms of haemorrhagic fever caused by African swine fever virus
(ASFV) and leads to almost 100% mortality in domestic pigs (Galindo & Alonso
, 2017; Quembo, Jori, Vosloo, & Heath, 2018). Since ASF was first identified
in Kenya in the 1920s, it has rapidly spread in Africa and Eurasia and
presented as 24 genotypes (Galindo & Alonso, 2017; Quembo et al., 2018). For
instance, a genotype II ASFV derived from eastern Africa has resulted in
substantial economic losses in many Eastern and Western European countries (
van Heerden, Malan, Gadaga, & Spargo, 2017). An ASF outbreak in Irkutsk in
far eastern Russia was reported early in March 2017, demonstrating that ASFV
has a remarkable capacity for transboundary and transcontinental spread (
Kolbasov, Titov, Tsybanov, Gogin, & Malogolovkin, 2018). Following the
outbreak in Irkutsk in 2017, some outbreaks occurred near the borders of
China in 2017 (Kolbasov et al., 2018). Although ASF has yet to be reported
in China, the prevailing and exacerbating epidemic in nearby countries
indicates the high risk of introduction and spread of ASF (Lk, 2017).
We were told that, from mid㎎une 2018, all of the pigs fed table scraps in a
farm near Shenyang City in Liaoning province (Figure 1) suffered from acute
clinical and pathological signs, including high fever, dullness,
generalized reddening of the skin, obvious enlargement of the spleen, and
congestion and generalized haemorrhage of the lymph nodes, heart, spleen and
kidney. All of the 400 pigs died within 1 month after the first clinical
signs appeared and the farm was abandoned. Sporadic cases with similar signs
were observed in different pig farms in northern Shenyang City.” | n****G
