A Jaguar strike aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed during a routine
sortie, killing the pilot and a teenage girl working in a field in Madhuban
police station area of Mau district on Thursday.
The pilot was identified as Flying Lieutenant Siddhartha Pandey. Sources
said he belonged to UP. The girl was identified as Ruma Sahni, 18.
The aircraft, which had taken off from the Gorakhpur Air Force base at 12.10
pm, crashed into the fields at Dhelai Ferozpur village within 15 minutes.
The girl’s mother and her brother, who were working in a nearby field,
suffered minor injuries.
Eyewitnesses told the police that the aircraft, which was flying very low,
first hit a tree on the outskirts of the village and caught fire, Mau SP
Onkar Singh said. Within seconds, it crashed.
On seeing the approaching aircraft, Ruma tried to run away but was hit by
flying debris and died on the spot. Four goats grazing nearby also died. | p*****p
