London sailed up the river as a show of strength in an attempt to help free
the frigate. The Communist forces were not intimidated and took the cruiser
under fire. London returned fire with her 8" and 4" guns, firing several
hundred rounds, but was hit several times. Her two forward 8" turrets and "X
" turret aft were damaged and made inoperable, and her bridge sustained
several hits. London retreated down river and returned to Hong Kong for
repairs which lasted until the end of July.

In 1949 she took part in the Yangtze Incident when she, with others, went to
aid of HMS Amethyst. Black Swan suffered 12 men wounded, and severe damage
to her superstructure in a fierce engagement with Chinese batteries, and
fell back. Overall the failed relief effort cost 46 killed and 64 injured. | d**********0

至于没有打沉，这个原因很简单，因为解放军炮兵是对陆地攻击的，所以缺少破甲弹和
延期引信，即便是命中30多发炮弹，也没有将其击沉（根据炮三团报告）。而且紫石英
号扯起白旗后解放军就没有射击了。

总前委和粟裕，要求他们不攻击前来救援的两艘英舰。结果因为电报来晚了，23军把两
艘英舰打回上海后，4月28日毛又指示总前委说紫石英事件是一个偶然事件，所以不必
扩大此事。到上海战役期间，毛又指示粟不得和外国军舰发生冲突。紫石英号搁浅后，
经历了很长的时间，解放军还每天向军舰提供燃料，同时命令各江防部队不以击沉为目
的，要在不击沉的前提下阻止紫石英号逃跑，所以江阴要塞改换了有效阻击的炮兵阵地
，因为怕击沉了要犯错误，这也就是为什么紫石英号能够逃跑的重要原因之一。

At 1036 fire was opened from the North Bank in the vicinity of LIU-WEI-
CHIANG (lat. 32°1' Long. 119° 59' E.). The ship was hit immediately by
projectiles which appeared to be of 75mm and 105mm calibre.
The opposition consisted of 4" gun Batteries well dug in, but plainly
visible, on the bank and of anti-tank weapons of 40mm calibre which fired
high velocity armour piercing shot which were capable of damaging 8"
Gunhouse armour and piercing turret trunking. These guns were well
camouflaged and none were spotted. One hit on the top of ‘A’ turret
suggests that there may also have been howitzers in action. The firing on
all occasions was accurate and well sustained in the face of heavy fire from

A major worry over the whole time was the supply of food, some essential
spares such as radio valves, and particularly oil fuel. Some food could be
bought locally and on a few occasions, after prolonged negotiations and many
setbacks, stores did arrive from Shanghai. And once they managed to get
some oil-fuel left in Nanking sent down, but usually after days of
negotiations with high hopes of speedy agreement the whole thing would
become bogged down in frustration.
Shortly news came of another typhoon which would miss them by a more
comfortable margin, and so on the afternoon of 30th July, with only 55 tons
of oil fuel remaining, Kerens decided to break out that night.
Almost immediately, the merchant ship was challenged and made some reply.
Then Amethyst was challenged, and no reply being forthcoming, heavy
artillery and Oerlikon fore opened up. A Communist gunboat anchored ahead of
Amethyst started firing at the shore batteries, the merchant ship got
scared and put out all her lights and complete confusion reigned. Amethyst
cracked on at full speed and escaped with only one hit forward on the
waterline. When they last saw the merchant ship she was well on fire, and
shooting was still going on.
There was a strong current helping them but the feat of navigation is
almost unbelievable. When they reached Concord they had only 9 tons of oil

Thus early on Tuesday, April 19, the frigate H.M.S. "Amethyst" (Lieutenant-
Commander Skinner) sailed f r o m Shanghai for Nanking, wearing the White
Ensign and the Union Jack and with the Union Jack painted on her hull. When
"Amethyst" reached a point on the Yangtse River some sixty miles from
Nanking, at about nine o'clock, Chinese time, in the morning of the 20th,
she came under heavy fire from batteries on the north bank, suffered
considerable damage and casualties and eventually grounded on Rose Island.
After this, the captain decided to land about sixty of her crew, including
her wounded, who got ashore by swimming or in sampans, being shelled and
machine-gunned as they did so. We know that a large proportion have, with
Chinese help, arrived at Shanghai. | r********9

30日逃跑，期间绝大部分时间江南江北都是解放军的地盘。共军方面如果想要打沉紫石
英号，那是分分钟的事情。
当然在某些人眼里，TG放紫石英号一马是TG的YY，也许真实历史是TG对着紫石英号轰了
几个月也轰不沉，紫石英号上面的船员们也可以钓长江里的鱼吃。哈哈哈哈。
