sell, what about Vietnan, Russia and the other countries? Before China's
actions which essentially lift rare earth from ordinary minerals to
strategic minersal, when rare earth is easily accessible from the
international market, who cares whether China is the dominate player?
Dumping with cheap merchants and sqqueezing out competitors (or other
countries' domestic producers) and then obtaining the price setting power is
the trick played again and again by international giants. TG
unintentionally did the first part but lacked the strategic views to execute
the second part. |

about it, they should have thought about it thoroughly. China does not have
90% of the world's rare earth reserve, actually it only has about 30% of
the usable reserves. In terms of long term strategy, the focus should be
the bigger share - the 70% that is foreign countries. As long as you can
get access or control the other 70%, it does not matter at what price you
are selling your own 30%. Sometimes, planners with good strategic views are
able to turn previous bad decisions into a winning strategy.
Now that China already alerted the world about the strategic value of rare
earth, it is unlikely foreign countries would easily give up the control of
their rare earth reserves. But it is still not too late to expand China's
rare earth production to overseas. Now that few foreign companies currently
have the ability/capacity to build advanced rare earth mines, Chinese
mineral companies should try their very best to show the interested
countries (such Vietnam and other developing countries) their mining
technologies and set up Joint Ventures or other typies of entities to gain
access to such resources. |
