While acres of newsprint have been devoted to the death in China of the
businessman Neil Heywood, no one has realised how close his suspected
murderer is to the British Establishment.
Mandrake can disclose that Lord Powell of Bayswater, the former Downing
Street official, acted as a “mentor” to Bo Guagua, whose mother, Gu Kailai
, was arrested last week on suspicion of killing Heywood.
The peer, who, as Charles Powell, was private secretary to Margaret Thatcher
and then John Major while they were in Number 10, is said to have been a “
father figure” to Guagua while he was a student at Harrow School and then
at Balliol College, Oxford.
Lord Powell, whose Italian-born wife, Carla, is one of London’s most
popular society hostesses, is a president of the China-Britain Business
Council.
He is on the board of Diligence, an intelligence firm set up in 2000 by
former members of the British and American secret services, including Nick
Day, a former MI5 official. The chairman of the board is Judge William
Webster, the former director of the CIA and the FBI. | Y*****2
