The truth is, you don’t need me to tell you why you should create a killer
mobile app. Our world is filled with an ever increasing amount of mobile
devices, programmers, coders and excellent ideas just waiting for an app to
bring it to public consumption. I am going to present five reasons why you
should create a mobile app but really, you only need one: you love mobile
applications.
There are many reasons I can think of why you should learn to code so you
can develop a killer mobile application. The following is a quick list of my
top five.
1. Sheer Volume
By the end of 2015, there will be roughly 3 billion Android devices floating
around the world. By the same time, there will be roughly 750 million iOS
devices in circulation. Currently there are 7.046 billion people in the
world. If, by 2015, roughly four billion (high estimate) humans are
utilizing Android and/or iOS platforms, the audience for making a mobile app
strike gold is dumbfounding in scope.
The number one reason you should learn mobile app development: the market is
more than half of humanity. It’s a numbers game.
2. Learning Has Never Been So Easy
I am not going to lie: in this section I could promote the hell out of the
learning tools Pearson offers in terms of learning mobile app development.
From e-pubs teaching Android programming skills geared towards app creation,
to traditional soft covers teaching XCode for iOS and OS X development to
video tutorials offering a hands-on guide to building iPad apps with iOS 5,
learning to create a mobile app has never been so easy.
But that isn’t all. If text and video based content isn’t you thing,
online schools like CodeAcademy.com and the FlatIronSchool.com offer
students learned and seasoned with comprehensive onscreen tutorial style
lessons designed to teach and beef up your mobile development skills.
The second reason you should learn mobile app design: learning has never
been so easy.
3. Utility and Fun
Quick: what are your two favorite Android and/or iOS mobile applications?
Mine: Google Translate for Android (utility) and, at the moment, A Dark Room
(fun). I deal with a lot of international consumers and I also love a good
word based puzzle that makes you think. Both suffice. One of the main
reasons you should create a utility or fun mobile application is because you
love using them so much.
If you don’t want to create a utility app, get on game dev. Who knows, you
might have the next Flappy Bird on your hands. Likewise, if you don’t want
to create a gaming app, do the market a favor and create a utility
flashlight app which uses less battery than Droidlight LED Flashlight.
The third reason you should create a killer free mobile app: you love apps
so pay it forward.
4. Connection with Consumers
On the business side of the house, creating a mobile application for your
consumers to use allows you to connect with them on a more complete level.
How many times have you found yourself in the Google Play Store or the Apple
App Store searching for the app of your favorite brand or company only to
come up disappointed? It happens to me all the time with The Daily Beast.
Creating and designing a mobile application for your business allows your
customers to find you, access your services and further invest themselves in
your branded sales channel.
The fourth reason you should create a mobile app for your business: your
customers deserve more. Give it to them.
5. If You Build It, They Will Come
Yes, I just quoted my favorite sports movie of all time, “A Field of Dreams
.” The last reason you should develop, design, create, build a market a
mobile application for Android and/or iOS is to simply see if you can. Can
you build it? Do you have the skills? Do you have enough coding chops,
design skills and marketing skills to create a killer app, gain traction, go
viral and change the mobile lives of billions?
You just might but unless you try your hand, you will never know.
The fifth and last reason you should develop a mobile application: challenge
yourself. Test your skills and become a better mobile developer.
Summary: go out there and create a mobile app. Contribute to the mobile
market. Challenge yourself. Keep your consumers in your sales channel. Beef
up your mobile programming skills.
