to save commission, maybe u should choose scottrade which has no commission
for mutual fund.( of course u can go to vanguard and open an account,
but that will lock ur $ there and not easy for future movement.. so
better stick with a broker, so u can switch fund easily)
also, u can buy SPY urself.. the fee should be smaller as I recall(or similar)
but u may need pay commission, depends on your asset, it may or may not be a
better idea.

fund in a month (something like that). Otherwise, it's quite easy to transfer
money between your bank and account.
Just my impression, you may need to do some homework on mutual fund. Mutual
fund is not a dream for money.
Even they bite you a little bit, what can you do? They trick should be clearly
stated. You should check your statement by yourself.

tax...
s&p changes about 5-20 conponents yearly
so you may need to pay tax on those capital gain even u didn't sell the fund.
u should not have that problem on spy unless u sell it.
spy has about 1.63% divident now

but I do believe morningstar should be be first step to mututal fund
SPY is one of so called ETF, it is a stock. Moreinformation can be found
if u just google ETF.
benefit:
1. lower fee(than most index mutual fund, but vanguard is very low too)
2. low tax (actually, sp usually dump losers and add winners, so even
in mutual fund, there may not be much capital gain unless u sell it.

so maybe fund is better
