The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) created the Individual Taxpayer
Identification Number (ITIN) on July 1, 1996, for foreign-born individuals who
are required to file tax returns. The ITIN is a nine-digit number similar to
the Social Security Number (SSN) and is issued only to individuals who are not
