there was once when notre dame wanted to join the big ten. unfortunately,
that was way back, probably in the 30's (i dont know the exact decades),
and there was a strong national anti-catholic sentiment. big ten schools
refused to schedule notre dame, let alone accepting it into the league.
from then on notre dame set its course as independent.
