If Auburn’s Cam Newton has been adversely affected by what has to have been
one of the longest weeks of his life,
he’s hasn’t shown it on the field.
Forget about his running. He’s made some throws in the first half that no
doubt will cause the NFL scouts to sit up
and take notice.
We’re talking about ropes placed perfectly in tight windows, and a couple
of times, he didn’t even step into the throw.
Auburn’s touchdown drive right before the end of the first half, capped by
Newton’s 18-yard strike to tight end Philip
Lutzenkirchen, was certainly important. It tied the game at 21-21.
But just as important were Auburn’s two defensive stops prior to that drive
. One of those was a three-and-out, and
the second came after Georgia had moved into Auburn territory.
The Tigers’ defense, shredded for much of the first half, needed some
momentum going into halftime.
