Jon Gruden, former Bucs head coach: Likely won't leave the booth unless it's
for the NFL.
Mark Richt, Georgia: Claims he wants to finish his career in Athens.
Dan Mullen, Mississippi State: He may go back to the state where he had such
success as the Gators' OC.
Kevin Sumlin, Houston: Only 5-7 this season but won a bowl game a year ago.
Randy Edsall, UCONN: Huskies now the premier program in the Big East, thanks
to Edsall and his staff.
Gary Patterson, TCU: Patterson's sustained success at TCU has led to the
school jumping to the Big East.
Mike Stoops, Arizona: Hot and cold at U of A, but a defensive mind that
could bring the Hurricanes back to
their roots from the 80s and 90s.
Al Golden, Temple: Golden is also on Vanderbilt's radar after finishing 8-4
this season at a traditional
basketball school.
Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech: He has a track record dating back to the SEC
and is a bit of a name that
might stick in Miami.
Mike Leach, former TTU head coach: He lives in Florida now and is looking to
coach again.
Brent Venables, Oklahoma DC: AD used to be at OU and was a teammate of
Venables at K-State.
According to CaneSport.com (courtesy of the Clarion-Ledger in Mississippi),
the Hurricanes' search is
heating up and Mississippi State's Dan Mullen and former Tampa Bay Bucs
coach Jon Gruden are the top
names.
Here's what the site has to say:
"Sources have told CaneSport that they think that it is Athletic Director
Kirby Hocutt's ultimate vision if he
can land Mullen or Gruden when they have conversations Tuesday and/or
Wednesday and one of those two
guys is hired as Miami's head coach. Gruden has publicly denied interest in
the job and there are questions
whether Miami will have the budget to pacify a coach of Gruden's stature. At
the same time, others are
saying that budget issues have already been worked out and that Gruden is on
the brink of being
introduced as the new leader of Miami football."
...
ESPN.com's Joe Schad tells Rumor Central that Leach and Leavitt are not
legitimate candidates and that
Richt, Tuberville, Mullen, Sumlin, Stoops, Edsall, Patterson, and Golden are
the names on the 'Canes radar
right now.
Schad adds that Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano is a long shot and it
certainly appears that Gruden falls
into the same category considering numerous reports that he's committed to
sticking with his TV gig with
ESPN.
...
It's all still pure speculation, and all has been quiet in Coral Gables on
the coaching front. Sources are
whispering that a deal is in the works with Jon Gruden, while he and others
adamantly deny that the former
Tampa Bay Bucs coach has any interest in the job.
Schad also notes that Golden and Vanderbilt are not a match. "Golden is not
going to pass on the right
opportunity to wait for Penn State. But he's not going to a rebuilding job
like Vanderbilt. He's already done
that."
n the box to the right, we have who we think to be some of the more serious
candidates for the job, and
below we mention others whose names have popped up in a search that is just
beginning.
The Miami Herald's Manny Navarro admits the Hurricanes will likely land a
lesser name than Gruden, and
two more names he mentions are Texas Tech's Tommy Tuberville, who was
bandied about to replace
Shannon last year, and Connecticut coach Randy Edsall, who has denied he's
been contacted about the
Miami job or any others.
This from SI's Andy Staples on why Louisville head coach Charlie Strong may
be a good fit:
"Strong has only coached the Cardinals for a season, but he took them from 4
-8 to a bowl eligible 6-6, and
they were competitive in every game except a 20-3 loss to Pittsburgh. Plus,
his name has instant credibility
in the Sunshine State because of his work as Florida's defensive coordinator.
Sources said UM is considering a salary upwards of $3 million for Gruden.
Even if Gruden isn't available, the
new coach will be paid between $2-3 million. Others in serious consideration
, according to Navarro, are
Georgia's Mark Richt, who has said he's not interested, former USF coach Jim
Leavitt, former UM offensive
coordinator Marc Trestman, now with the Montreal Alouettes, and former
Florida offensive coordinator Dan
Mullen.
