starts with knowing and understanding what Michigan is all about. “What
clearly is important is that whoever it is has a clear understanding of what
Michigan is all about,” he explained. “This is a unique place, it creates
unique challenges, it also provides unique opportunities and what I know
and believe is that whoever comes into this job has to understand that
clearly and be well-suited for it.” Brandon also explained that he is
looking for the following qualities in the candidates that he will be
interviewing:
•A defensive-minded coach
•A coach who is able to modify their attack based on the personnel
they will be inheriting.
•Someone with head coaching experience which he described as a
significant advantage.
•Midwest ties, especially when it comes to recruiting which he
described as a distinct advantage.
•A coach who can compete against the “benchmark competitors” that
Rodriguez went 3-15 against (Notre Dame, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin,
Penn State, Ohio State, and any bowl opponent).
Money will not be an issue. “I just want you to know that the University of
Michigan when you look at kind of where our benchmark has been in terms of
our comp packages for our head football coaches we’ve traditionally been in
kind of the middle of the pack,” Brandon explained. “That’s been kind of
our tradition and I don’t necessarily believe that that’s appropriate. My
point is that there’s a market out there and you pay for value and the
marketplace dictates what those price tags are. So I want you to know that
my philosophy and I believe that my boss and my boss’ bosses understand
that concept and we’ll do what we need to do to get the right coach to
Michigan.” |
