You knew it was coming. You knew the very instant Michigan State head coach
Mark Dantonio uttered the words "tragic hero" regarding former Ohio State
Cheater-In-Chief Jim Tressel that somebody was going to answer. Somebody did
, and Dantonio went 10 shades of scarlet.
"He's done a lot of good for college football," Dantonio told the assembled
media on Thursday, at the Big Ten football meetings in Chicago. "Every
person he's come in contact with as a player and a coach, he's made a
positive impact on their lives. To me, it's tragic. He becomes a tragic hero
in my view. Usually tragic heroes have the ability to rise above it all in
the end, and that's what I'll look for in the end."
At that, roughly nine out of every 11 attendees (those not directly
associated with Ohio State or Michigan State) stifled laughter. Those in
scarlet and gray, or beholden to the Buckeyes for their livelihoods, nodded
earnestly and solemnly. And those of a green and white tinge had to be
thinking, "Oh, please. No."
But Dantonio put himself out there on behalf of college football's most
recently disgraced head coach, and he's not backing down. He found himself
backing up his statement the next day, though, after being informed Michigan
broadcaster Jim Brandstatter had tweeted a forceful challenge to his
assessment.
"When is lying to your boss, to the NCAA heroic," Brandstatter mused. "Is it
heroic to teach young men that wrong isn't wrong unless you get caught?
Gimme a break."
Informed of Brandstatter's tweet on Friday morning in Chicago, Dantonio
unleashed the fury he generally reserves for vertically challenged Michigan
running backs in attacking the messenger.
"Who? What did he say," Dantonio demanded.
Informed of Brandstatter's take, Dantonio continued: "I don't even know who
that guy is. As far as I'm concerned, he's never coached one day of college
football or had a relationship with college players, a real meaningful
relationship.
"But I know I'm going to be criticized. I figured I would be, but that's
okay. It wouldn't be the first time."
Nor, obviously, should it be the last.
Dantonio puts significant effort into belittling Brandstatter. Dantonio then
throws up the shield around himself, bravely noting he's used to what he
certainly feels is unjustified criticism.
He just fails to deal with the criticism itself. He fails to deal with
substance.
Why is it okay to lie, cheat and steal (now-vacated victories)? Is it
because those gestures enhance real meaningful relationships?
Tressel certainly had a positive impact on Terrelle Pryor's life. Pryor left
Ohio State substantially enriched and never lacked for a loaner car while
in school. The Shoe salesman even protected Pryor's future sales inventory (
another Big Ten championship ring, gold pants, and assorted OSU gear) by
covering up the fact that the quarterback had no business setting foot on
the field in 2010.
Some Spartan fans have sycophantically swept to Dantonio's defense,
insisting the MSU coach isn't really calling Tressel a hero. They're
scrambling to stress the literary definition of "tragic hero," which is the
main character in a tragedy.
Dictionary.com describes the tragic hero as "a literary character who makes
an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and
external forces, brings on a tragedy."
One problem with trying to Shoehorn Tressel into the "tragic hero"
definition - no tragedy exists here.
A child abduction represents a tragedy. A 20-year-old with inoperable cancer
represents a tragedy. A tsunami wiping out a village represents a tragedy.
A lying, cheating head coach losing his job after getting exposed isn't
tragic. It's justice. A coach who has made millions of dollars and a once-
stellar reputation by serially circumventing the very NCAA rules by which he
was bound getting shown the door isn't tragic.
It's long overdue.
Dantonio won't admit it. Tressel is his blood brother, and in this case,
blood is thicker than water and the NCAA rulebook.
The big boss in East Lansing can't, or won't, recognize that right is right
and wrong is wrong, whether it's in Ann Arbor, Columbus, or Tuscaloosa.
His buddy got busted, and it's no tragedy.
Coach Zero Tolerance should certainly recognize that fact.
