Denard Déjà vu All over Again
Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson stuns Irish late for third straight
year

South Bend, Ind. – The good news for Notre Dame is this is the final time
they’ll ever have to face electrifying Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson
. The bad news is on Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium he did it to the Irish
again.

For the third straight year, Robinson led the Wolverines down the field for
the climactic score in the final seconds that culminated in a thrilling win
over Notre Dame. The No. 11 Wolverines escaped South Bend, 28-25, after
Robinson led Michigan on an 8-play, 68-yard drive that culminated with his 2
-yard keeper with 19 seconds left.

“What can you say, (Robinson) is special,” Michigan Coach Brady Hoke said.
“That young man is just a leader and a winner. To come into this
environment and do what he did late after the way we started the game is
really something. Our guys never feel like we’re out of a game as long as
the ball is in his hands.”

Michigan has now won four straight in this series for the first time since
this annual rivalry of college football’s all-time winning programs was
renewed in 1978, and those four victories have been by a total 15 points.

“Obviously we’ll be elated when (Robinson) finally exhausts his
eligibility,” a frustrated Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly said. “So much for
the luck of the Irish, because you’d figure we’d catch a break in this
game one of these years. We played well enough to win tonight, but we just
couldn’t get the stop we needed at the end.”

The Irish fall to 2-2, and already are in danger of seeing their BCS bowl
hopes evaporate. They get a week off before facing Miami (Fla.) in two weeks
. Traditionally, Michigan has been a statement game about what kind of
season the Irish will eventually have. Since the series renewal in 1978,
Notre Dame has averaged five losses per season in years it loses to Michigan
, and only once has posted double-digit wins in a season that included a
loss to the Wolverines.

Kelly, who said in the days leading up to this year’s Michigan game that
this was a “gut check moment” for his program after last week’s loss at
Michigan State, had little patience when reminded of that trend after
another loss to the Wolverines.

“Those numbers and trends are interesting for the media to talk about, but
they don’t mean anything to these players and this team,” Kelly said. “
All that matters is winning games and getting Notre Dame back where it
belongs in the national title picture.”
Kelly’s quest to wake up the echoes will have to wait at least another
season thanks to the late-game, Heismanesque heroics of Robinson.

Down by five with 1 minute and 14 seconds left, Robinson and the Wolverines
took possession at their own 32-yard line with no timeouts remaining. Yet it
only took three plays for Robinson to move Michigan into Irish territory
thanks to Notre Dame’s blitzing defense. In an attempt to avoid a repeat of
what Robinson did against soft zone coverage late in last year’s primetime
classic in Ann Arbor, the Irish chose to play aggressively and blitz
Robinson. Except his scrambling ability set up consecutive pass completions
to Roy Roundtree, and then Robinson scampered 14 yards and got out of bounds
for another first down, which stopped the clock.

“You have to pick your poison with a player like (Robinson),” said Notre
Dame linebacker Manti Te’o, who had a game-high 15 tackles and an
interception. “You can’t shut him down for an entire game, so you have to
hope you made enough plays when you had the chance so that he doesn’t
eventually beat you, and we didn’t. This might be the most difficult defeat
I’ve had in my career here.”

Almost as if the Irish crowd could sense Robinson was poised to break their
hearts yet again, Notre Dame Stadium actually got eerily quieter the closer
to the end zone Robinson drove the Wolverines.

“There is no better feeling than doing that to a home crowd,” Robinson
said. “That’s when you know you have the momentum and all you have to do
is execute.”

The Irish eventually forced a 3rd-and-7 at the 31-yard line, but with an
exhausted pass rush Robinson was able to escape the pocket yet again and
dash all the way to the 16-yard line for a key first down.

“That was the play that broke their spirit right there,” Michigan left
tackle Taylor Lewan said. “They had good coverage down field, but they just
couldn’t get to Denard. That’s why he’s special.”

Robinson then hit Jeremy Jackson on a 14-yard slant pass that set up his
eventual winning 2-yard touchdown run. By that time it seemed like eons ago
that Notre Dame once led, 16-7, after a mistake-filled first half for the
Wolverines.

Buoyed by the primetime atmosphere, the Irish took the opening possession
and drove it right down Michigan’s throat, thanks mainly to the running of
Cierre Wood. The Wolverines answered right back with a 38-yard touchdown run
by Fitzgerald Toussaint, but things quickly went downhill from there. After
the Irish missed a 42-yard field goal, Te’o picked off an errant throw
from Robinson to set up Notre Dame’s second touchdown. Michigan went three-
and-out on its next possession after two holding penalties, and then punter
Will Hagerup bobbled the snap leading to a Notre Dame safety.

“No, I’m not surprised we came back,” said Hoke, responding to a question
in his postgame press conference about the Wolverines’ mental state at
that point. “I know some folks are tired of me saying it, but this is
Michigan for Pete’s sake. This is the winningest program in the history of
intercollegiate football, and team 133 understands they have a
responsibility to uphold that legacy.”

Hoke said his defense, despite surrendering 412 yards of offense, was one of
the keys to the game.

“Our red zone defense was outstanding after the first quarter,” Hoke said.
“That’s something we stress and teach. One of the keys to the game was
our red zone defense, because that’s where the character of a defense is
tested. Four times (Notre Dame) was in our territory and didn’t get
touchdowns. If our defense doesn’t rise up just one of those times then
Denard doesn’t have the chance to do what he does best.”

Kelly said the game was more about Notre Dame losing than Michigan winning.

“We never put (Michigan) away when we had the chance,” Kelly said. “
Hopefully this will be a learning experience for this team, and they’ll
remember how much this hurts and learn from it going forward this season and
beyond.”

The Wolverines improved to 3-1 with the victory, and after a bye will open
up Big Ten play at Purdue in two weeks.
