Louisville, signed a grant of media rights, the ACC announced. The deal,
which is effective immediately, runs through the current TV contract between
ESPN and the ACC, set to expire in 2027.
"This announcement further highlights the continued solidarity and
commitment by our member institutions," ACC commissioner John Swofford said
in a statement.
The agreement states that if a school leaves for another conference during
the length of the contract, that school's media rights and revenue for all
home games remain with the ACC.
That is a huge factor in preventing schools from jumping conferences, one of
the perpetuating fears among ACC leaders. The ACC has been a target for
other conferences to poach. Maryland is joining the Big Ten in 2014 along
with Rutgers, and several other ACC schools have been targeted for
speculated expansion in the Big Ten and SEC.
Last May, the ACC and ESPN restructured its TV deal to a reported 15-year, $
3.6 billion agreement. ESPN has reported each school is expected to receive
about $18 million per year with the addition of Notre Dame this summer, and
when including the roughly $52 million exit fee the ACC requires its members
to pay upon leaving, it would be a costly departure. |
