LSU's decision to part ways with head football coach Les Miles and offensive
coordinator Cam Cameron wasn't a package deal after all, a source with
knowledge of the situation said Monday.
After replacing Miles on an interim basis Sunday, Ed Orgeron was given the
option to make the call on LSU's embattled offensive coordinator, the source
said.
Orgeron ultimately decided a major change in philosophy was needed and chose
to elevate tight ends coach Steve Ensminger to the position. Ensminger, a
former LSU quarterback, has been a coordinator at multiple stops in his 30-
year career, including McNeese State, Louisiana Tech, Texas A&M and Clemson.
He had been coaching tight ends at LSU since 2010.
At his introductory press conference Monday, Orgeron said the Tigers would
have a new direction offensively.
"We're going to spread the ball out a little bit, do some different things,
change the style of play," Orgeron said. "There's a lot of things on offense
that we've done well, running the football, and we want to have a different
passing game. We want to be more creative, find ways that the quarterback
can get the ball down the field throwing it.
"Obviously, we know people hold up the box on Leonard (Fournette) and
Derrius Guice, and we want to put the ball in our playmakers' hands. We want
to throw short for the quarterback and move the ball down the field. You
have to score points these days."
