After 18 years in Los Alamos, a Chinese restaurant transplanted itself to
Albuquerque’s West Side to offer a quiet, authentic dining experience.
Chinshan, which means “golden mountain,” opened in early August near Coors
and Irving NW.
Co-owner and head cook Sieu Ly comes from a long line of Chinese
restaurateurs, including his parents and grandparents, who run Chinese and
noodle restaurants in Vietnam.
Ly said his menu consists of authentic dishes more reminiscent of Hong Kong
cuisine than Americanized Chinese food.
“He (Ly) wanted to be a little different,” said Ly’s niece Amy Duong.”He
didn’t want to be just another restaurant with a buffet. … (His
restaurant is) for people who just care for good food and a more peaceful,
quality environment.”
Duong recommends the wonton soup, crispy beef, Peking duck, chicken pot-
stickers and shrimp with green beans in black bean sauce, among other dishes
. Ly gets all of his Asian ingredients from Talin Market in Albuquerque.
“He has a really big menu with a lot of choices,” Duong said.
The restaurant provides a lunch menu that includes a choice of soup, egg
rolls and fried rice along with main dishes.
Also, Chinshan can serve indecisive families for dinner, offering group
meals with a variety of dishes.
“You get a little bit of everything,” Duong said.
Ly and his wife, Kinh Duong, decided to move to Albuquerque this year after
their son went off to college in California. They wanted to experience a big
city and decided the West Side would be the best place to settle down after
inspecting several empty restaurants in other parts of town.
“He had this good feeling, like ‘OK, this is the one,’” Duong said. “He
saw that view of the mountain. It was kind of perfect.”
