The Middle Grades Initiative is an academic support and early college
awareness program of the City University of New York founded in 2005.
Five CUNY colleges partner with 11 small secondary schools in the
Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens, providing services to students in target
grades through high school graduation. In 2006, CUNY received a
six-year GEAR UP grant for the United States Department of Education
to expand MGI. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs) is a federal grant program aimed at increasing
the number of low-income students prepared to enter and succeed in
college. An additional 1,000 students joined MGI in September 2006,
thanks to our GEAR UP grant, bringing total enrollment to 2,100
students. For more information on the MGI/GU Program, please visit
