Dev > Support > BA > PM
Support is better than BA/PM because you get chance to interact with trader
pretty often. If you are good, you can learn a lot business (FO support).
Dev is a better path if you want to do quant dev in future. Even pure dev in
quant shop can earn $$$. But you must be really good at algo and low level
programming.
PM is the worst job ever in bank IT. i bet you don't want to manage
timesheet and resource for living.

case. Although it still much depends on how good you are (whether trader
trust you), you can learn a lot business knowledge. But whether you can
apply your knowledge is another case.

hang out with trader (esp if u r pretty girls), you may have an edge in
support role. if you only know how to do small talk in c++, dev is the role
to take.
for any routes, if you want to do business later, get another degree while
you work (assume you are CS grads now). Usually IB reimburse the tuition. it
would help you transit much easier.
don't listen to those who said "IT position in bank is just crap". All I can
see is IT becomes more important in banks every year. The barrier between
business and IT is also smaller than before (and a lot of IT ppl don't want
to change anyway).
It is true IT industry seems like a better choice now but you can't always
be a trend chaser. Who knows when the bubble of silicon valley collapse? I
don't really think those who earn 100K+ while work less than 8 hours a day
could be competitive enough to find another job to maintain their life
quality.

roles. There is no way out on BOs, you are a cost center, you want to be
in a revenue generating role. Don't farking settle for BOs. |
