25 global companies set up R&D centres in India in last 18 months

BANGALORE: In a sign that high-skilled Indian talent remains much in demand,
as many as 25 more global companies have established R&D centres in India
since the beginning of 2012. This takes the total number of MNC R&D centres
in India to about 1,031.
Among those who have entered in the past 18 months are Groupon, Unilever,
Expedia, Panasonic, FireEye, Ricoh, Royal DSM, Ruckus Wireless, Abbott, and
Sigma-Aldrich, says a just-released report by research firm Zinnov.
Groupon's R&D centre works on creating social buying platforms, the Expedia
centre helps build travel platforms that they sell to other companies. "
Unilever's R&D centre works on packaging technologies, supply chain products
, creating new plant layouts and plant machinery," said Sundararaman
Viswanathan, manager-consulting in Zinnov.
Viswanathan said that France's high-tech engineering company Altran was
growing its India centre so rapidly that it was "doing to product
engineering outsourcing what IBM did to IT outsourcing ten years ago (by
building a powerful base in India)". He said companies like Altran and
Sogeti, a Capgemini subsidiary that specializes in engineering services, had
given their India centres the P&L responsibility for many locations outside
of their strongholds in Europe.
