In the August issue Nature published a news article titled "Why great
Olympic feats raise suspicions". In the article Mr. Callaway questioned the
record-breaking performance of the 2012 London Olympic gold medal winner Ye
Shiwen.
We believe that data should provide knowledge about the accused "anomalous"
performance. We agree with Callaway that databases should be constructed to
record how athletes improve their performances. Different from Callaway, we
have constructed such a database.
To obtain big observational data for athlete performance monitoring and to
provide insights regarding the accused anomalous performance of Ye Shiwen in
particular, we manually and automatically retrieved data from various
sources. With the data we have constructed a comprehensive database of
swimmers' performances in various competitions from 2007 to 2012. Our
database now contains information of more than 2600 swimming athletes, more
than 500 events in different games, more than 40,000 records of individual's
performance of different splits.
