Some tips …
1. The road in the park is shaped like the letter “8”. All the main
tourism attraction spots are on this grand loop “8”. There are very good
signs and you won’t get lost.
2. Almost all the well-known geyser basins are located on the west part
of the grand loop, but I personally like the east part of the grand loop
better, where there is a bigger variety of the scenic views and landscapes
to see.
3. If you don’t hike, 2 days is good enough to see pretty much
everything in the Yellowstone park.
4. Grand Teton national park is very close to Yellowstone park. It is
just like an extension of the Yellowstone park. Grand teton has splendid
snow mountain and lake views, which is a must-see. But if you have visited
Banff and Glacier national park, you can skip Grand Teton. Grand Teton is
small. 3-4 hours is sufficient to visit that park.
5. The best place to spot animals at yellowstone is Lamar Valley, which
is not located on the grand loop but not too far from the grand loop.
6. The best time of the day to spot animals is early in the morning or
around twilight.
7. Binoculars!!! Otherwise, you won’t see anything. Bears tend to stay
far away from people. My binocular is 10X42, which works great. You can also
rent a very powerful binocular nearby the park.
8. I think the most beautiful spot in Yellowstone is Artist Point of the
Yellowstone canyon. You should definitely go there. Then comes Lamar Valley,
a must-must-see!!
9. The most beautiful geyser basins, I think, are Midway Geyser Basin and
Norris Geyser Basin. Don’t miss them!!!
10. From Lamar Valley, if you keep driving to the outside of the park,
there is located the notoriously well-known Beartooth Highway. The view of
that highway is marvelous. If you have time, I recommend you do it.
11. The road of most part of the grand loop “8” is wide and safe, but
the portion from Tower Fall to Canyon Village is kind of scary, where you
have to drive along a sheer cliff sometimes. But you can avoid it by going
the other way around. It is a loop anyway. But as you know, risky driving is
always rewarded with beautiful views.
Our itinerary FYI:
We drove there. We did a loop. We set out at 4pm from Seattle on Thursday.
We stayed at Baker City, OR on Thursday night. We arrived Grand Teton after
lunch time on Friday and spent half day at Grand Teton. On Friday night, we
stayed at Grand Teton. We headed for Yellowstone on Saturday morning. We
stayed at Yellowstone for 2 days. We headed back home on Monday morning by
taking I-90 and got home at 9pm on Monday. |
