to give subscribers in some markets special access to their content,
Vodafone revealed on Monday.
Vittorio Colao, Vodafone’s chief executive, said Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook
’s chief operating officer, had asked him to ‘zero rate’ its content –
exclude it from counting towards a subscriber’s data plan – in certain
emerging markets during a recent conversation. Facebook declined to comment
on the discussions.
Mr Colao, who was in New York to talk to Vodafone shareholders before the
sale of its 45 per cent stake in Verizon Wireless to Verizon closes later
this month, said he declined the request because, “it does not make any
sense . . . [there] is no reason why I should give my network
capacity for free”. |
