我揣测一下,这两不相干啊
送私立不等于可以不用在请TUTOR
送私立也未必就比最好的公立高级多少
请TUTOR的钱也不等于可以送私立啊

If you think a private/public school teacher would tailor the teaching
program to match the potential/progress of a single student in the class,
then you are wrong. Never heard of such special treatment in any school.
The difference between school learning and private tutoring is similar
to that between a group lesson and private lesson in piano. I am sure
most parents in this forum understand what I mean.
Most excellent students we met or knew of are from public schools. So are
all of the friends of James. His level is way above everyone else in his
grade. For example, last year before the start of the middle school English
class, his class had a diagnostic test for students' reading comprehension
abilities. His score was the highest: at college sophomore level according
to the scale. He mentioned that some passages must have been directly copied
from some classic novels he had read since he could recognize the tones and
opinions expressed by the characters. When I first heard the news that a
particle had been proved to travel faster than light, I asked James what
particle could do that. His answer without reading the news was neutrinos! I
was speechless. His understanding of particle physics is way beyond my level.
Therefore starting from last year, I subscribed to Nature and Science just
to expand his exposure to science in general. Only $99 each for a year.
Cheap! We already had Scientific American and National Geography at home. I
am not saying that he understands all the hard science discussed in those
journals. I only want him to know what is out there for people to explore.
The private tutors we hired were extremely talented and genuinely nice
people. Every one of them loves teaching James. They chat about many
topics other than science, ranging from their adventure in Nature to some
touchy issues in politics. They treat James as an intellectual, not a child.
I am sure James learned a lot from his tutors as much as what he learned
about science through the tutoring sessions. If you are surrounded by good
people, it would be easier and natural to become one yourself.
At James' level, school work is like daily commute and private lessons plus
other extracurricular activities are like professional racing. Therefore, he
needs a good coach or coaches.
Finally, we are not rich people to begin with. A good public school coupled
with ample private tutuoring is the best we can afford. James has friends
everywhere since he moved from school to school, from coast to coast. We do
not own a house or a fancy car. But we enjoy learning and exploring the world.
Our plan for the summer is to visit the museums in Europe. View the masterpiece
in their true colors!

BTW, I think you should buy a house though.House market is at the bottom,
interest at the bottom, you are in an excellent school district. To manage
family/personal finance is very important, having too much cash sitting idle
is burdensome. With both parents working, even though you are spending $

It depends on the readiness of the child. In the very beginning, we had a
group lesson in Math for him when he was four and a half. He was the
youngest in the class and the teacher just placed him next to her desk. So
he was accustomed to extra classes after (pre)school at a young age. Then
when James was 8 years old in third grade, we hired his first private tutor
and the subject is Chemistry. Less than a year later, we hired a Physics
tutor.
Now he has finished College General Chemistry (twice) and College Inorganic
Chemistry, and he will start College Organic Chemistry later this year and
Biochemistry after that. Originally our plan was to let him enroll in a
local community college so that he could run some experiments in the lab.
That proved to be almost impossible due to his age and the college
regulations. It turned out only a few colleges allow students younger than
15 to enroll in any college-level class, for credit or for fun, on-line or
in person. I might have to build a lab for him at home (secretely) or
figure out a way to sneak into a lab somehow.
The Physics subject is at a slower pace than Chemistry. Math private
tutoring started when he was 10 for pre-calculus. We also bought Grey's
Anatomy for him.
Based on his progress so far, it appears that James can breeze through most of
the AP science classes in high school. If so, he would have more time to focus
on social activities and team competitions.

You can search your local area for private tutor services. There are a lot
of them. Then you can check their reputations using Yelp, Google, etc. Read
all the comments about them, good or bad. Finally you can try out a tutor
for a month. If not satisfied, switch. But once you find a good tutor or

But if the school program fits a kid, then you don't have to use that much
of his after school time, you free him up for other things.
Do you think most of the private tutoring content will be learned at the
school anyways later on?
I'm most curious about this: Did the move from one school to another have
negative social impact on James? Seems most parents around me are so afraid
to break kids friend circle when it comes to move or not decision. Common
view is at least you don't break that within the elementary years, or within
middle school years, or within high schools years. If you have to move him
to start a new middle school or high school at the first year, that's still
acceptable if you have to.
Your potential move this summer, is that because after a close look your
family is disappointed about Thomas Jefferson High?

Good question.
I am a chemist by training. When James was young, I was still a hard-working
medicinal chemist in San Diego. Occasionally I took him with me when I ran
some extra experiments in the lab. Of course, I would not let him roaming
around in the DANGEROUS chemistry lab, where even the air was potentially
toxic! Therefore, I would leave him in my office, where I posted a Periodic
Table on the wall. Since James was an early reader and he was bored sitting
on my chair, he started memorizing the elements from the periodic table when
he was around one and a half years. H is hydrogen, O is oxygen, Fe is iron,
etc. By the age of 3, he pretty much remembered all elements of the top
three rows.
Later we bought A LOT of books on science: rocks and minerals, biology,
chemistry, physics, astronomy, math, geology, geometry, evolution, etc. He
read those books with high interest and started to have meaningful
conversation with us about natural phenomena under the Sun or beyond the Solar
System. We just let him explore the unknowns without much restriction. To
sharpen his math skills, we enrolled him in a weekly group lesson run by a
San Diego husband-and-wife team when he was four and half year-old. We
believe that math is a foundation for science and made sure he started on a
good footing.
With respect to English, history and other social science, since James was a
ferocious reader, he naturally picked up skills all by himself or through
classes at school. We never asked him to memorize articles or new words.
Somehow he expanded his vocabulary and learned how to express himself
efficiently. All I can say is that we bring him to Barnes and Nobel on a
regular basis for a shopping spree. We have thousands of books at home.
But we do not have TV service at home. For entertainment, we watch TV series
online after he finishes homework and private lessons. That's it.
Hope the above helps.

Our transfers from school to school, from coast to coast, had minimal effects
on James' social life. As I said before, he has friends everywhere. For
example, he Google chats with friends both from San Diego and from Virginia.
In addition, he enjoys doodling and reading, which are both perfect
vehicles to kill time and release anxiety. He is also a joker, who knows how
to have fun and make fun of his parents. I know he wants to go back to San
Diego since he has so many good friends back there and SD's weather is one
of the best in the world. James attended 4 different elementary schools in San
Diego. He knew A LOT of students of his age.
We may or may not move, depending on our career choices. That's a different
story. If we stay, James has a good shot at TJ next year. If we move, he
could still excel in any school he joins.

It's about right. If you buy 100 hours, you would get a discount.
