Alexander Roman, a 17-year-old senior at Harding High
School in St Paul, Minnesota, is heading to the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology to study engineering or physics.
Munira Khalif, who attends Mounds Park Academy in St.
Paul, Minnesota, is heading to Harvard after she was accepted by all eight
Ivy Schools and three others. She was one of nine youngsters in the world to
receive the UN Special Envoy for Global Education's Youth Courage Award for
her education activism, which she started when she was just 13. Khalif
Khalif will study political science at Harvard.
When eight-year-old Stefan Stoykov moved from his
family's one-bedroom apartment in Bulgaria to the U.S. after his parents won
a green card lottery, he could not speak a word of English.
Stefan's extracurricular activities include tutoring other students with
language barriers, running the cycling club and Spirit Week and joining the
stock market club, the Indy Star reported. He is also valedictorian and
secured a perfect SAT score by borrowing test guides from the library.
Now the 18-year-old senior at North Central High School in Indianapolis,
Indiana is getting ready to pack his bags again - but this time he's heading
to Harvard.
Agbafe, a student at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington,
North Carolina, is the son of Nigerian immigrants. The high school
valedictorian says his mother and father raised him with a strong support
system and always encouraged him to push himself to do his best。
'HARVARD class of 2019!!!!' he wrote above a photo of him posing with the
statue of John Harvard on the Cambridge campus. 'Let's live the dream!!!!'
The 17-year-old was accepted to 14 schools in total, including all eight Ivy
League schools and Stanford and Duke.
At Cape Fear Academy, Agbafe serves as Student Body president, plays on the
basketball team, and participates in various other extracurricular
activities. He wrote his Common Application essay on participating in his
school's Day of Silence, and how "the rights of the LGBT community ties in
with human rights."
Harold Ekeh, from Long Island, New York, also announced his chosen school on
his Twitter page.
'Officially Yale Class of 2019!!! #blessed,' he wrote.
Ten years after his family moved him from Nigeria to the U.S., Harold Ekeh
is hoping to do something for them in return.
The 18-year-old was accepted by 14 colleges in total and, 10 years after his
parents moved him from Nigeria to the U.S., he said he is hoping to do
something for them in return: study neuroscience to cure Alzheimer's, the
disease his grandmother has.
The straight-A student at Elmont Memorial High School secured an SAT score
of 2270. He also worked as editor-in-chief of his student newspaper and
chief executive of the Model United Nations.
Pooja Chandrashekar, a senior at Thomas Jefferson High
School for Science and Technology in Virginia, might have used her
incredible brains to secure offers from all Ivy League schools - but when it
came to make a decision, she went with her gut.
'After much deliberation, I've finally committed to Harvard,' she told the
Pioneer Press.
Pooja, who is an only child, is obsessed with computer science and coding -
and thanks her engineer parents, who immigrated to the U.S. from Bangalore,
India, for getting her hooked.
Among her many achievements, she developed a mobile app that analyzes speech
patterns to predict if a person has Parkinson's disease.
Last summer, she completed an internship with the non-profit, the MITRE
Corporation, working with engineers to develop ways to diagnose concussions.
She also founded her own non-profit, ProjectCSGirls, to encourage middle-
school girls to participate in science, technology, engineering and math
programs.
Fernando Rojas' parents immigrated to California from
Mexico and only complete 8th grade education in their lives. But Fernando
Rojas, a 17-year-old senior from Fullerton Union High School will head for
Yale and plan to become a lawyer later on.
As well as the Ivies, the co-valedictorian and national speech and debate
champion received acceptance letters from Stanford, UC Irvine and Cal State
Fullerton.
'They all came at the same time, I felt so bad for the mailman,' he told NBC
.
He said the upbringing he received from his seamstress mother and machine
operator father are responsible for his work ethic. Neither made it beyond
elementary school but worked hard for him and his older siblings.
'They still took the time to instill in us these morals and these values of
having to work hard and having to be resilient,' he said.
'Knowing that I have these opportunities that my parents didn't have and
knowing I have to appreciate that, that's what got me through the struggles.'
