the trigger on plans to eliminate 4,800 positions (see this) and close
several sites. Now, Bayer is getting rid of about 4,500 jobs - including
some 1,700 in Germany - over the next two years, although chairman Marijn
Dekkers insists that 2,500 positions will be added in emerging markets over
the same period.
In explaining the move, the pharma and chemical maker says that sales and
earnings are “under pressure” from generic products, rising development
costs and the effects of health care reforms - which are among the factors
cited earlier this week by Moody’s Investor Services in a report that
reiterated a negative outlook for the pharmaceutical industry (look here).
Reducing the headcount “is the only way we can sustainably finance our
investment in growth and innovation - for example in new pharmaceutical
products, in our BioScience business and in the expansion of our capacities
in Asia,” he says in a statement. The move is expected to save about $1
billion in annual costs by 2013, although there were no details about the
types of jobs to be eliminated or which, if any, facilities might be closed

有限, 虽然希望不要一直走下坡路.

the pharm industry may not recover even after the economy comes back as a
whole...
