This camera is a modification of Polaroid Land Camera.
1. It is a specialty camera, not your do-it-all LF camera.
If you intend to put it on your tripod, I would say forget about it, go get
a 45N2. IMO, Saber is best suited to shoot enviromental portraits. It is
never intended to be used to shoot architecture or serious landscape. I
think there are quite a few rangefinder experts here, so I will stop here. I
would say 85% /15%, 85% handhold, 15% on monopod, would be a good
distribution.
2. Why Saber?
There are quite a few folding rangefinders in the market. Start with 4X5s
Technika, Graphic that is in a different league.
For Polaroid modifications, there are infamous william litterman, and Razzle
. If your LD is as rich as AJ, go get a william litterman, otherwise razzle
is a good option. If you can not get a Saber, Razzle is as good.
Razzle pros: shift/tilt, when it folds, the lens are inside the body, finer
focus.
cons: a little bit bunky, weird focus mechanism (right hand reach out to the
focus knob away from camera body, left hand hold the camera)
Medium format folders
There are quite a lot folders in the used market, GF670 is one of them.
pros: almost everything, nice lens, quick work flow.
cons: It is medium format. No matter what ppl says, size matters. With 4X5 I
don't have to worry about grains while still enjoy the tone of my favorite
film.
I will let the experts on this board to chip in about the GF670.
One more thing Saber is certainly a very good conversation starter...(I
think it must have something to do with ZhuangBbility...)
3. Which lens to use on Saber?
In case you got one saber in the second run which will start very soon. My
suggestions is DONT use heavy/long lens, 120~135 is the range. I know Planar
135 is nice, but... Try to pick a small compact lens.
4. Will there be another run next year?
It is still up in the air, a lot of uncertainty.

If you shoot 4x5 film only, it might be a okay machine to use.
If you shoot polaroid only, this is not worth considering.
FYI, razzle stopped making tilt-shift bodies. Not all lenses can be folded
into 110a/b body, only a few small lenses (150mm) could.

cheaper than litterman, yes (over $1500 used).
I had two razzles and it costs $600 each, brand new with complete back
systems.

4X5 polaroids are $3 a sheet, and 3X4 are $1 sheet, compare to HP5 4X5 $0.95

If you shoot Polaroids only try to get a Fuji Instanx something.
2. I have seen tilted version, but IMO that is not useful at all.
The Razzle I played with has a dagor 135, pretty sharp. Not those boken that
portraits shooter looking for.

The one thing that I hate about Razzle or any 110 modifies are the focusing-
shoot mechanism, I guess it works better for a lefty.

Did saber repaint the ZI finder or did they make their own finder? I am
guess the former. It's a good finder.

polariod 4x5 is AWESOME. Very fun to use and there is postive and negative
(like original polaroid film). 3x4 is great and I don't think $1/sheet is
expensive ( you can also get postive+negative if you want to).
I use polaroid land 180, 195 for the 4x3 film.
Then, crown graphic with 4x5 film and polaroid 4x5.
the razzle tilt/shift is completely useless. that's why he stopped making it
.
The polaroid land 180,195 lenses are super sharp and fast. It gives very
narrow dof at minimum focus distance. It's great for portrait.

Right now I am using Fuji FP100B in Polaroid 550 holder. Can I get negative
with that film too? As I said shooting Polaroids on Saber is usually a good
conversation starter. According to the other topics here shooting polaroids
can help you to pick up girls...
never use 180 and 195, but I guess that if you use a 135 Heliar, it could be
very good for portraits.
