When photography was first invented in 1839, the nude was one of the first
subjects to be photographed. Like the oldest profession, early images of the
nude circulated in society exclusively among male viewers. This course will
explore how images of the unclothed body were transformed over the last 170
years due to changing technologies, ideas of beauty, gender politics, and
post-modernism’s insistence on diversity. From 19th century images of the
nude by French painters-turned photographers to post-modernism inclusion of
all kinds of bodies, students will explore the various socio-political
meanings behind the viewed body and their effect on the development of the
genre.
Note: Elective for Certificate in Photography. Minors must have departmental
