While very few cancer studies gather data on the sexual orientation of its
subjects, new research published in the online medial journal Cancer reports
that homosexual males in California are “nearly twice as likely to report
a cancer diagnosis as straight men in the state.”
The study, which was based on a large health survey conducted by the state
of California, sought to explore the impact cancer had on local gay men and
lesbians.
According to the results, about 8% of California’s gay men had been
diagnosed with some form of cancer versus only about 5% of straight men.
Meanwhile, cancer diagnoses among lesbians were more evenly matched with
those of straight women.
HIV is speculated to be one of the major contributing reasons for the larger
number of diagnoses among gay men.
"There's a higher prevalence of HIV positive men in the gay population, and
we know that being HIV positive is related to cancers, so this might drive
the differences we found," said Ulrike Boehmer, an associate professor at
Boston University School of Public Health, and one of the study’s authors. | D**S 发帖数: 24887 | 2 I am curious HIV enhances the occurrence of what types of cancers. | g********d 发帖数: 4174 | 3 Do people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have an increased
risk of cancer?
Yes. People infected with HIV have a substantially higher risk of some types
of cancer than uninfected people of the same age (1–4). Three of these
cancers are known as "acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining
cancers" or "AIDS-defining malignancies": Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin
lymphoma, and cervical cancer. A diagnosis of any one of these cancers marks
the point at which HIV infection has progressed to AIDS.
People infected with HIV are about 800 times more likely than uninfected
people to be diagnosed with Kaposi sarcoma, at least 7 times more likely to
be diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and, among women, at least 3 times
more likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer (1, 3).
In addition, people infected with HIV are also at higher risk of several
other types of cancer (1, 3, 4). These "non-AIDS-defining cancers" include
anal cancer, Hodgkin lymphoma, liver cancer, and lung cancer.
People infected with HIV are at least 9 times more likely to be diagnosed
with anal cancer than uninfected people, at least 10 times more likely to be
diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, and 3 to 4 times as likely to be diagnosed
with liver and lung cancers (1, 3).
People infected with HIV do not have increased risks of breast, colorectal,
prostate, or many other common types of cancer (1, 3). Screening for these
cancers in HIV-infected people should follow current guidelines.
