Reports from both The Wall Street Journal and NBC News say Defense secretary
Leon Panetta and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, will announce Friday that the military is ready to officially repeal
“don’t ask, don’t tell.”
Once the certification announcement is made, the military will have to
address questions about the benefits same-sex couples will receive, says the
Journal.
“While the military will be free to provide some services to same-sex
spouses, such as family support for spouses of deployed service members,
federal law blocks it from providing them the full range of health, housing
and education available to heterosexual couples,” the paper reports. |
