A Connecticut high school’s production of “Zanna Don’t!” featuring a gay
kiss between two male students has caused quite a stir.
MSNBC reports that the kiss triggered a wave of complaints from
conservative
groups and parents who claim that homosexuality is being forced on their
children.
However, supporters have stepped up to praise the high school for refusing
to remove the kiss from the production and furthering the message of
tolerance to teens.
Watch the clip below as representatives from both sides of the kiss
controversy debate the issue.

The Advocate reports the beating of an openly gay teen from Ohio was
captured on cell phone video earlier this week.
The video catches the attacker waiting for the gay student, a 15-year-old
boy named in video below as "Zack" by ABC's WSYX in Ohio. The station
interviewed the victim's mother, who describes what she saw of the vicious
beating on tape.
"The boy stood there and waited on him, and waited on him, and waited on him
," she told WSYX. "And then as soon as he walks in the door, the boy hits
him. Zack walks away, 'What did I do? Why are you doing this?' And he keeps
walking away."
But then the boy grabs Zack, stands over him on the ground and delivers at
least seven punches in quick succession, the smacks audible on the tape.
The mother told the station that her son might have a concussion and chipped
teeth, and that she wants that attack pursued as a "hate crime." The mother
is certain it was motivated by her son being gay.
"It's my son," she said, "and they did it just because he's a homosexual."
"I was waiting for somebody," says the boy, whose identity is hidden in the
news report. "I covered myself, I shielded my body, and he just kept hitting
me and nobody did anything."
The station reports that antigay comments were made on the attacker's
Facebook page two days earlier.

Homosexuality at school
Homoeroticism is hard topic for underage students
Should teenage students receive education on homosexuality? Do underage
pupils have to be taught that it is a violation of human rights to ostracize
purported gay and lesbian peers? Should schools identify homosexual
students to protect them? Liberal educators seem to have gone too far.
The advisory council on the Seoul Education Board has proposed that a
students' bill of rights should contain a code banning students from
bullying same-sex adolescents. It says it is a violation of human rights for
homosexual students to be isolated inside schools.
The board headed by liberals said schools cannot pretend not to know the
lingering confusion of sexual orientation among students. Homosexual
students must receive attentive care so that they can become decent members
of the community. It advocates the necessity of adopting the rule.
The proposal reveals the reality that there are an unidentified number of
students with homosexual preferences.
Many conservatives are fretting over the proposal. They argue that underage
students would no longer be able to continue their school life once
stigmatized as gay. They worry that an official debate on homosexuality
might instill either fantasy or confusion on sexual orientation. They
contend that the proposal might unduly fan homosexuality among teenagers.
Teachers cannot turn a blind eye to some students having different sexual
orientations or preferences. Teachers need to consult these students so that
they do not feel frustration and resort to extreme acts.
However, it is premature to initiate an open discussion on the issue inside
schools. In Korea, even gay adults are leading double lives as homosexuality
is still a taboo. The military officially bans it. The National Human
Rights Commission of Korea recommends the banning of discrimination of
homosexuals.
A poll showed that 77 percent of Koreans have a negative view of
homosexuality. The number of people trying to understand homosexuality has
risen, especially among young people.
In Confucianism-lingering Korea, many parents think of marriage and bearing
children as an obligation. A strong conservative Protestant lobby has made
Korea a difficult place to be gay.
Liberal educators seem to be far ahead of the times. With many adults
reluctant to discuss the issue, open debate on the homoerotic issue among
teenagers is a tall order. If educators want a debate on lesbian love, then
why do they not propose an open discussion on heterosexuality and
bisexuality?
Until homophobia disappears from society, schools should shelve the debate.
Accurate data on the number of gay and lesbian teenagers is necessary.
The education board needs to prioritize addressing such urgent issues as
textbook errors and students’ poor writing. Educators must devote
themselves to normalizing public education before discussing sexual
tendencies.
Students can use their discretion on hair and dress codes and possibly enjoy
the rights to assembly inside school. Homoeroticism is too hard a topic to
digest for underage students.

Help close for youth infected with HIV
Kelly Ip
Monday, October 24, 2011
The University of Hong Kong is ready to help an epileptic teenager from the
mainland who has been refused treatment by hospitals there because he is HIV
positive.
The 15-year-old youth, known as Xiao Sun, was infected through a blood
transfusion nine years ago.
HKU pediatrics professor Virginia Wong Chun-nei said he will be treated like
other patients.
His father, Sun Ya, who champions the rights of HIV patients though he has
hardly any income, says the family will figure out how to pay for treatment
"when the time comes."
According to Hospital Authority guidelines, the neurosurgery that Xiao Sun
likely requires could cost HK$38,000.
Sun Ya and his wife arrived here two weeks ago with Xiao Sun in the hope of
receiving treatment after being turned away by dozens of mainland hospitals.
They went to Queen Mary Hospital when their son collapsed after suffering an
epileptic seizure while crossing a road. He was referred to a private
clinic.
It was nine years ago, when Xiao Sun was six and suffering a cleft palate,
that his parents took him to Beijing Stomatological Hospital for an
operation.
"Around 100 milliliters of platelet was transfused," his father said.
"He contracted pneumonia a year later and tested HIV positive. Shortly after
that he suffered from epilepsy, which can no longer be controlled by
medicines."
His son's condition has deteriorated over the years, said Sun Ya, who quit
his job to take care of his son and relies on a small security system
allowance.
"He can have up to a dozen seizures a day and even every three to five
minutes. His seizures may be triggered by a flash of a camera or when lights
are turned on and off. He even gets seizures when excited by TV."
Sun Ya said he took his son to top hospitals in Zhengzhou and Beijing, where
doctors said he needed surgery. But when he told them his son was HIV
positive the doctors said the hospital lacked the equipment required or
admitted they were afraid to operate on HIV patients.
Dissident and activist Wu Jia said hospitals in the mainland are scared of
HIV patients.
" If HIV patients are injured in car accidents they usually refuse to treat
them. But Sun Ya has never given up the hope of having his son treated. His
son is his life."
