w*****8 发帖数: 703 | 1 States in the West, Midwest and Northeast will be the next battlegrounds for
same-sex marriage.
Coming off successful measures legalizing gay marriage in Maine, Maryland
and Washington, gay rights activists are targeting:
— Oregon and Hawaii in the West;
— Minnesota and Illinois in the Midwest;
— New Jersey, Delaware and Rhode Island in the Northeast.
All of those states except Minnesota already allow civil unions. All are
near other U.S. states which now allow gay marriage. And in several states,
key legislative leaders are openly gay as well.
Meanwhile, the National Organization for Marriage will be pushing for
Indiana to amend its state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
"Obviously we are very disappointed in losing four tough election battles by
narrow margins,” Brian Brown, president of NOM said.
Same-sex couples will be able to marry in nine states and the District of
Columbia by next year.
Those states combined make up 14 percent of the U.S. population. Meanwhile,
30 states have constitutional amendments that define marriage being between
a man and a woman.
