lifted the stay on gay marriages in California, opening the way for same-sex
weddings to begin immediately.
"The stay in the above matter is dissolved effective immediately,'' the
ruling reads.
California Attorney General Kamala Harris quickly tweeted: On my way to S.F.
City Hall. Let the wedding bells ring!
There was a report that a wedding would occur at 4:15 p.m. at San Francisco
City Hall and that the Berkeley couple who were among the plaintiffs in the
case that brought down Prop 8, Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, will also marry
today.
In Santa Clara County, it is likely the first weddings will take place
Monday morning. As of shortly before 4 p.m. Friday, half an hour before
closing time, the clerk's office was waiting for advice from the County
Counsel's Office before beginning same-sex ceremonies.
The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Wednesday that the sponsors of California's
voter-approved gay marriage ban lacked the authority to defend Proposition 8
in court once the governor and state attorney general refused to do so.
The decision lets stand a trial judge's declaration that the ban violates
the civil rights of gay Californians and cannot be enforced. | m******1 发帖数: 19713 | |
