Read a little bit of Lore of Running. Paid particular attention to the health
section. It seems to me marathon and its training does no good to health.
Would half-marathon or even 10K be a better compromise?

Depending on what you want, if only for health, run 20 miles a week, race 5k
once a while would be great.
People run marathon not for health purpose.

Definitely Ego. For me, running is fun, training is not. Sometimes I am
wondering why I am still doing it, it is a goal to accomplish, a pr to set,
only very little portion might has something to do with health.

i wonder how do you separate training from running, i like to think all runs
are fun, except under certain weather conditions.
for me a big part of the fun is the challenge itself, and i focus on
distance. at beginning, a 5K looked intimating, then it became easy; so I
move on to 10K, and soon 10k was no big deal. then i started to think about
10 mi, then HM. it's like climbing mountains, you reach one peak, enjoy the
view, move on to the next mountain.
for other runners, may be the speed is their primary focus. but as long as
we take care of our bodies in the process, which we will have to, i can't
see why it's not healthy either physically, or mentally (ok, i admitted we
are a little bit crazy in others eyes :-))

There are different definitions of what being healthy is. Is healthy about
living longer, being disease free, better
performance in sex, or not dying after running 26 miles?

here is my order of being healthy:
- being disease free (relative speaking b/c no one is truly disease free)
- not dying after running 26 miles
- living longer (and run till i can't any more)
- better performance in sex (who cares about sex :-)

Marathon running and training is a lifestyle choice.
You would not go far if just running for ego or health.

it's all mental then. if HRM is a burden, you can run w/o it. whxhm1 has a
way of counting heart rate without HRM, and there are people who don't
follow any particular program. if you can keep improving without going to
any race, that would be great too.

yes, they only need the 10k splits or maybe 5k splits for reference, which
will be provided by clocks or supporters. if they race for a place, not for
time, then it will be even easier.

may be what you are asking is this: if i can no longer making any
improvement - distance or speed, and even start to decline, would i still
want to run?
the answer is definitely! with each passing year, though i'm slowing down,
so is my age group. i actually have better and better chance to beat
others simply b/c the number is dropping, and move up till i'm no.1 :-)

Some comments from you guys remind me of Buddhism.
As pointed out by George Sheehan (cited by the author of Lore of Running in
Chapter 15, p839), '...runners be classified into one of three groups-
joggers, racers, and runners...'; "Ultimately, the jogger/racer may evolve
into a runner who is unconcerned about the health aspects of running and
whose psyche no longer needs the challenge of the race. The runner runs to
meditate, to create, and to become whole. Sheehan writes: 'Running is
finally seeing everything in perspective... Running is the fusion of body,
mind and soul in that beautiful relaxation that joggers and racers find so
difficult to achieve'..."
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.
Happy jogging, racing, running...

Neither.
It's definitely not for health. It does a lot more harm than good to your
body.
It's probably not for ego. Running marathon is such a common thing these
days, it's nothing special.
It's just for personal experience. Those who have done it know how it feels
like.
