It was 4:30 in the morning. Baiji, Ryanflower and I were up, getting our
bags, ready for the big race. We got
on the bus around 6 which took us from Boston common to Hopkinton. The
temperature was in the 40s and
windy. Some say it was once in a life time weather for Boston marathon (
though it heated up a bit after the
race started and I didn't feel much wind except for a few short moments).
Going to the bathroom close to
race start is tricky. Baiji had the great idea of using gatorade bottles
while covering oneself with a trash
bag. It was a bit tricker than I thought -- peeing 3 feet away from female
strangers is rather awkward
despite that I was inside a trash bag. Yrreko also enjoyed this method.
While the fast guns Ryanflower and Yrreko went to corral 2, Baiji and I
lined up in corral 6 waiting for the
start. The crowd was big and we couldn't see the starting line from where we
were. The good thing about
Boston marathon, though, is that everybody is fast. You don't have to worry
about getting blocked by slow
runners. Despite that, Baiji and I ran the first mile very conservatively. I
only wore a regular stop watch. The
first mile had some steep downhills and I was taking it really easy. It felt
like warm up pace. At the first mile
mark, I saw my split about 7:30. It was a slow start but nothing to worry
about. The next couple miles I
tried to easy into it, and was running between 6:55 and 7:00. It felt easy,
but not super easy. I already knew
by then that I wasn't ready to go sub 3. I told Baiji at the time that 3:02
was perhaps a realistic goal for me.
After 5,6 miles, Baiji started to get in the zone and picked up the pace. I
tried to follow him for a while,
when he was a few meters ahead of me. Then I felt that it would require me
to run at a slightly
uncomfortable pace to stay with him. I felt undertrained and it wasn't a day
I want to push early on. So I
backed off and saw Baiji vanished in the crowd. The first half was relative
quiet until we got to Wellesley
where all the girls were screaming on the right side of the road. I didn't
feel good after mile 10. All the
downhills made my calves tired. For a while I ran next a group of guys from
Navy academy. The guys were
extremely polite and nice, though they were joking around and ran left and
right to high five with
spectators, and it made me felt terrible because the pace didn't feel easy
for me! When I got to around mile
14, 15, I felt the worst. I think I simply wasn't used to the downhill
pounding with forefoot strike. I felt that
way also in my previous 20-mile test run on the course. My half split was 1:
32:4x and I didn't think I could
make 3:05, judging how terrible I felt at the time. I was already slowing
down to over 7 minute pace, and I
hadn't even got to the Newton hills yet. Today isn't my day, I thought.
Come to think about it, I probably also slowed down intentionally around 14,
15 miles, because I knew
exactly where the hills are and was saving my energy. My calves were worn
out and I started doing heel
strike. But since I was using slightly different muscles for heel strike, I
seemed to have found a different
gear. Even if I ran a crappy race, I thought, I didn't want to look bad on
the hills. The first significant uphill
was actually before the Newton fireman station, already starting past mile
16. I kept up my pace, and once
we made the right turn at the fireman station, with a full view of the hills
, I picked up my pace and started
passing people. Strangely, I felt totally comfortably running up the hills.
That was the first one of the
Newton hills. And then there was the second. And then the third. And then
heartbreak hill. I had no trouble
on the hills. They seemed all too easy. I was looking for my wife and
daughter and was planning on
stopping and kissing them, and never found them (turned out that they
overslept and so did Baiji's family).
After heartbreak hill it was easy cruising. There were a few more rolling
hills, but nothing significant. Unlike
my previous BQ attempts when I really pushed hard after mile 20, this time,
I didn't have as much
motivation to put on an all out effort after mile 20 and was really just
trying to enjoy the race. I saw Baiji at
around mile 23.5, who had slowed down significantly, and knew that he must
have had some trouble. I really
only started pushing it like a real race in the last two miles. With one
mile to go, I looked at my watch and
saw that I needed a 6:40 last mile to break 3:05. That's doable, I thought
to myself. I started breathing
really fast and was passing people. The crowd was screaming on both sides
but I couldn't see their faces. I
had to concentrate. When I crossed the finish line I knew that I just barely
missed 3:05. It was 3:05:02. Not
sure if it'll get me in Boston next year, but it was all I could ask for
with the training I had, and I was
satisfied with the way I ran the race.
After I finished, Baiji came in in a couple minutes. He had stomach trouble the entire way. We then saw
Ryanflower and Yrreko again, both of whom ran excellent times and were checking out our results through
Xiaolong's online update on their iphones. Gzyxy had hit the wall at mile 22 and joined us later. We also met
a large group of Yrreko fans (!) and had lunch together. It was great seeing one of our guys at the volunteer
station, and another familiar face on the side of the road. There is nothing quite like the hometown
marathon race. A friend who saw me race told me later that at mile 23 I looked like I just woke up and had
coffee and was out for an easy run.
Looking back at my training this spring, it was a combination of good and bad. I ran very little in January,
and really only trained 10 weeks for this. My mileage had been the lowest in a year. The most I did is 50
miles per week. Half of that was in a long run, the other half on the treadmill. The 50K trail race I did five
weeks before Boston had a big impact on my body. I wasn't able to train fast for a while after that. I also got
sick for a week a week before the race, and had to cut my mileage further. I didn't run enough tempo
out on the road, and ran very little downhill, which is presumably why I felt crappy in the first half and
didn't feel like I could push my pace like I did last fall in training runs. On the other hand, because I did
multiple 22+ mile long runs, my endurance was enough so that I didn't feel any wall at all. I actually felt
significantly better after mile 17. That could be a good thing now that I'll be concentrating on the ultra for
the next few months.
The lessons are simple: do really long long runs, and put in a lot of weekly mileage. Both are necessary
components of running a successful marathon (unless you are ryanflower). Downhill is tougher than uphill
for me. They say the Boston course beats you up, and it's very true. I don't know if my time is good enough
to get me in next year's Boston marathon. In any case, next year I will try to train properly and break 3
hours.

Nice report! The Gatorade bottle might not be a good idea as someone might
mistaken it as the real Gatorade...

You race what you trained for. Whx had quite a few treadmill hill running,
but not much downhill (of course on treadmill). That's why whx was running
much better in second half.
