It was just past 8am, and I found myself in Bear Mountain, NY, having been
running for the last 3 hours. A few minutes ago I was at the aid station at
mile 13.9, snatched a few boiled potatoes dipped in salt, grabbed a quarter
peanut butter sandwich, and dropped a Nuun electrolyte tablet in my
waterbottle. Any other day, I would have been wondering, how could I
possibly run THAT slow, covering only 14 miles in 3 hours? But today,
staring down the trails, I was thinking more like, how could one possibly
RUN that?
Well, I have come to learn that "flat" is a relative term. In Boston
marathon, 6% grade incline is called Heartbreak hill. In North Face
Endurance Challenge - Bear Mountain 50 miler, 10% grade is called flat. I
was learning that instead of striking the ground with the outside edge of my
feet as road runners do, on the trail one must step toward the outside and
land flat or on the inside edge of the feet to avoid spraining the ankles. I
felt strong on the climbs, thanks to the masochistic treadmill sessions at
15% incline I've been doing this spring. But I do NOT know how to run
downhill, and man that was frustrating. Guys that I overtook on the ascent
or flat sections were passing me easily on the descent like mountain lions.
At one point I asked the runner next to me, "how do you go down so fast? It'
s incredible watching you." He replied, "I have to concentrate, and I'm not
afraid of it." Just as he talked to me, he lost concentration for a split of
a second and fell to the ground. Ok, better shut up if I want to get out of
here alive today.
The person who came up with the Bear Mountain trail race must be a sadistic
madman. On several sections I had to climb with my hands. Large sections of
the trail consist of nothing but rocks, of varying size, on the average
perhaps the size of a person's head. A lot of them have sharp edges. You
gotta think where to put your foot with every step you take. One misstep and
you could sprain an ankle or get bloody legs. Most road runners would take
one look at the trail and decide that it is not possible to run. They would
be right if running must be faster than 8 minute miles. Here, you have to
make compromises, and get used to the notion that anything faster than
walking is running.
The next aid station was at mile 20.7. I cannot recall all the rocks I ran
or climbed over to get there. All I could say is that it was indeed
technical as advertised (5 stars out of 5), and "technical" is just another
word for "sadistic" when it comes to trail running. A camera man was waiting
there to take my picture, and it turned out to be Tonyprince who is our
pacer today. My running buddies Robin and Serendip were ahead, while
jcstrive was behind me. We camped near Bear Mountain last night, where we
carb-loaded with bagels and grilled chicken on fire. We met another camper
who came all the way from Alaska to run the 50K version of the race. He
mentioned that a friend of his from Alaska ran the 50 miler last year. He
forgot to mention that his friend also won that 50 miler and became known to
every ultrarunner last year after breaking the western states 100 miler
course record by half an hour.
Soon I caught up with Serendip, who went out a bit too fast and was slowing
down to recover. I learned that Robin was 10 minutes ahead of me. The next 7
miles were not nearly flat by a road runner's standard, but at least I
could run at a somewhat reasonable pace, which is all I could ask for. I was
joined by a New Yorker who was originally from Germany and an experienced
ultra runner. He told me that he did this race last year in over 11 hours,
while having finished JFK 50 miler in under 7 hours. The time difference
speaks for the difficulty of this trail. I also noticed that the guy has his
knee wrapped up in bandage and there was a bloody patch on his forehead -
he must have fallen on rocks and received some medical attention earlier in
the race.
It is now getting hot, and I was running out of water. Luckily I get my
dropbag in the next aid station at mile 27.7, and grabbed a second water
bottle. With one water bottle in each hand, I feel like a true ultrarunner
and am ready for the second half of the race. Tony just arrived in his car.
He will be pacing Serendip from here. I went ahead and found Robin at mile
34. He was complaining that he was worn out, but his form looked just fine.
He came into this race with ITB and achilles tendon problems, and we were
really worried if he could run it at all. What was remarkable was that Robin
was able to descent on rocks with ease even when he was worn out, whereas
every descent was a struggle for me.
After 36 miles or so, my body is starting to notice that we are in an ultra.
It's telling me, "hey, this isn't just one of those regular weekend
adventures you put me through, is it?" I thought of my wife and daughter,
and all of a sudden my tears were about to rush out. I could hardly control
my emotion. Good thing that I could still control my body so that I don't
fall on my face. In fact, I felt strong. This is the 50-mile graduation
event. I think I am a true ultramarathoner today.
At mile 40, another cameraman called my name. It turned out to be Wordpress,
who came with his son to watch and pace us. He would later take over Tony's
job to pace Serendip for the last 10 miles. The woman at the aid station
told me that I didn't look like I just ran 40 miles, and that my hair was in
fine form. But I was feeling it for sure. 41 to 43 miles were particularly
difficult, not only because of the climbs involved, but that I was hitting
the wall. People speak of the wall in the marathon at 20 miles. First time
marathoners suffer greatly at that point, some feeling like they would not
make it alive. The ultramarathoners hit the next wall at 40 miles. How could
the body possibly take that? The answer is that the body learns from its
past trauma and gets used to it. In my first 50 miler back in January 2009,
it felt pretty damn hard after mile 40, but I was on the road and even if I
was exhausted I could simply shuffle my legs and keep moving forward. Today,
I must focus at all time, otherwise I would not be able to get out of here.
I knew that it was just a bad patch and I will get over it. All I needed to
do is to keep pushing.
At mile 44.7, a volunteer told me that the next 2.5 miles is "a little bit
uphill, unfortunately". I told her that I was used to running uphills by now
. Little did I know that "a little uphill" means to climb over a mountain,
where it is not only impossible to run, but walking up runs you out of
breath. And the descent was so steep that if you miss one step you would end
up in the hospital, that is, if anybody finds you. Honestly I couldn't
believe that it was only 2.5 miles. Felt like eternity. And then the trail
goes along a river of rocks, a true test of endurance and strength -- you'd
better have saved some legs just to be able to walk over it. And the last 2.
8 miles, supposedly "flat", consists of ups and downs on grassy cross
country like courses with a little bit of rocks. I was breathing fast at
this point, either from depletion of the body or from knowing that I'm close
to finish, perhaps a bit of both. I ran the last section at a fairly strong
pace, as if I hadn't run the first 48 miles at all. I thought I would
collapse dramatically after crossing the finishing line, but that didn't
happen. I actually felt quite good (in relative terms). My time was 10:59:09
, which put me at No.38 over all.
Soon after, Robin came in as well with a strong time, despite a pair of
hurting knees. Serendip came in just after 13 hours, having successfully
revenged his DNF from last year, and jcstrive pulled off a miracle finish 20
minutes before the final cutoff time, despite having cramped in the first
20 miles of the race and came dangerously close to the cut early on. It was
hugely successful for all of us. Wordpress says he would not be pacing us
next year, having learned what the last 10 miles looked like.:)
Many thanks to fatboyhog for letting us use his car for this awesome trip,
and to the excellent pacers Tonyprince and Wordpress. The whole thing would
simply be impossible without Tony, who took care of all sorts of details and
packed our tent and stuff while we are running. It is a pleasure to meet
Robin finally, and great to see Serendip and jcstrive's gutsy finish. You
guys are amazing.
Now, it is time to work on the downhills and get ready for Leadville.

What a great experience and time!
Reading this post really puts me into the view of the trail and I think I
can imagine how hard it is and how amazing all of you guys are.
Talking about running/hiking/walking on the descent, I think I am a
relatively fast guy doing that. But I have to test it in a real trace. Maybe
next year I will think about ultra.
And congratulations, you seem to be in a really good shape. Have another
wonderful journey in Leadville.

Last year two marathons in three weeks put me in a miserable stage, with

I suck at the descent. But I've learned some tricks through this experience.
The bear mountain race is about as technical as trail race gets. I will
likely be back next year to improve my time on this course (I also took
three bathroom breaks due to stomach problem and got lost twice and probably
ran an extra mile).

I was in no rush to rebuild after the races. I waited till 5,6 days after
Boston marathon to decide whether to sign up on the bear mountain race. It
just happens that I feel that I'm recovering fast enough to do it. Listening

I think downhill skills are also important.
My friend just finished his Marathon Debut at the big sur with 3h16m, 3:30
was his goal and he did take bathroom break during the race too.
He mentioned the downhill skills he accumulated during his trail running are
extremely helpful, which let him recharge fast and make up the time he lost
during the uphills.

frankly, you are still too young for that. downhills running will definitely
wear your knee out. better wait till your Marathon PR become permanent

I don't think so. If you think running downhill wears out your knees then
you are not running correctly.

I second wolfstar. no matter how you do it, running/walking downhill is
going to wear your knees no matter what, to different extents.

Ultramarathon or trail running isn't for old runners that are not fast
enough. If you have never heard of Kilian
Jornet, check him out.

I respectfully disagree. Serious trail ultra runners may log more downhills
miles in a month than a road
runners does in his life. The technique is essential.

that depends on the amount of skill. in the bear mountain race, some runners
around me were flying down the
rocks in ways that I had to see to believe. to be honest I couldn't even
imagine Haile Gebrselassie could go
down that fast. I'm not talking about -5% here. I'm talking about -15%, -20%
, -30% downhill, hopping on
rocks.

非常赞同你的观点, 我敢说很多trail runner在公路上肯定跑不过你, 不过在trail
上,技术和经验起非常大的作用。而且人家跑的轻松还不受伤。

The trick is to land on your forefoot. Of course there is impact on the
knees, but so is running on flat surface.
The question is how much, whether you will be wearing them out faster than
your body could repair itself. You
cannot say that downhill is always bad for you. It all depends.

yes the skills are essential, you need to use your calf and quad to buffer
the impact and use your core to balance. that being said, my point is
running downhill takes a bigger toll on your knees, even if you have
excellent skills. but then of course, the safest thing to do is sitting on
the couch.

I didn't know that forefoot landing is the key for descent on steep trails,
until Robin told me after the race. I
feel that if I knew it before the race I could have shaved 20 minutes from
my time. I will be working on it from
now.
