When I arrived at May Queen station, the pain in my left shin became fully
blown. It hurt to walk a step. FFF was waiting for me. I sat down on a chair
. Some crazy hippie dude runner was sitting next to me, asking me everything
. He was like, "you are doing great. fuck it, yeah!" Then I realized that he
was drunk. He had probably dropped out of the race or something. My left
anterior shin started to hurt bad, and I needed help. I asked a volunteer to
tape it up. He said it looked swollen. As I sat, even a gentle touch to the
shin hurt excruciatingly .
FFF asked me if I needed a pacer but the reality was that I could not run at
all. But I could use some psychological help. FFF grabbed my camelbak and
waterbottles and started to walk with me. The trail alongside Turquoise lake
became a lot rockier than I remembered at the beginning of the race. I
tried to shuffle when there are no big rocks in the way, which amounts to
the speed of a brisk walk. But every now and then I would bump my feet into
a rock and it hurt so much that I had to stop for second.
Soon walking became difficult, and I thought I could use a stick. FFF went
into the woods to look for sticks for me. After 3, 4 tries, she found the
perfect one. Hold the stick in my left hand like a walking cane, I slowly
marched forward. 13.5 miles. Merely a half marathon, but for someone barely
able to walk, it might as well be an ultra. Every step hurt. And I would
endure that pain for more than 5 hours.
At any minute, I could have dropped out. No doctor would advise me to
continue. It was a pure pain fest, pure hell. But I remember Ken Chlouber's
words. "I command, I will not quit." I would not let down the volunteers who
came to support the race, and I would not let down my friends. I could not
recall any time previously in my life that I had to endure such pain for
such a long time. In the marathon, even if you hit the wall, it's going to
be over in 30, 40 minutes. Here, once the pain blows up, it is going to last
hours and hours. It will crush you. And you have two options, to quit, or
to continue. This is Leadville, and Leadville is not for quitters nor
crybabies. I must dispel the demons in my head and continue.
The sun had risen. I knew that I could finish before the cutoff as long as I
keep walking, no matter how slow. I felt weak but I didn't want to eat
anything. I would hardly make any difference. FFF told me I looked pale. I
felt that way too. But it didn't matter. All it mattered was that I must
continue. Sometimes I would stop for one second, hold on to the stick, and
the pain would rush up from my left ankle. Then I would walk some more.
After 28 hours and a few minutes, I saw the finish line. The red carpet, the
finishing gate, up the hill. Walking uphill was easier than walking
downhill for me. The pain was slightly less. I saw trajan and serendip
waiting for me. I could not manage a sprint. I could not run at all even
with all my strength. My sprint to the finish was to take the stick, my
walking cane, off the ground. And the crowd went wild. I walked through the
tape, carrying my walking stick, and collapsed. I could no longer stand. I
didn't even have energy for tears. The journey was finally over.
In the medical tent, I could not sleep with the excruciating pain in my left
shin and ankle. I had to take tylenol. serendip brought me water and soup.
Then I fell asleep. When I woke up, next to me laid an army ranger, who
finished the race and was treated with IV and oxygen. His wife and dad were
with him. The dad greeted me, and I greeted him back. Yeah, we finished.

看到你的描写,仍然觉得非常惊心动魄。你竟然忍受了5个
多小时这种非人的痛楚,那意志力实在是非凡的。
在Winfield的时候看到有人问,pacer应该怎么做,回答是,
Talk, talk, and talk. Eventually he'll tell you to shut up.
所以我那一路尽量一直说话,虽然whx已经没有力气回答,
估计在心里也在想让我shut up了吧。:)
因为之前在May Queen的时候坐车里睡了20多分钟,Power
Nap非常有效,而且吃了不少东西,所以我在那个时候觉得
在湖边的林子里走路是很惬意的事。
