Dosage and Standardization
Oral: 400 mg 3 times/day, standardized to contain ≥0.25% capsaicin content
per dose; may also be standardized to Scoville heat units, with 150,000
being average
Topical: Apply as directed by manufacturer
Reported Uses
Anti-inflammatory and analgesic (topical) (Magnusson, 1996; Nagy, 1982;
Rains, 1995; Tandan, 1992)
Cardiovascular circulatory support (Newall, 1996)
Cluster headache (Fusco, 1994; Marks 1993)
Concentration/stimulant (Meyer-Bahlburg, 1972)
Digestive stimulant (Newall, 1996)

Summary
Cayenne pepper (chili pepper) has been used as a spice for foods in many
cultures and as a traditional medicine for centuries, especially with the
Native American culture. Cayenne is regarded as a digestive aid, carminative
, antispasmodic, rubefacient, and counter-irritant. Externally, topical
preparations of capsicum oleoresin (0.25% to 0.75%) are used for the pain
associated with arthritis, rheumatism, and cold injuries. Internally,
capsicum has been reported beneficial in increasing peripheral circulation
and improving digestion.
Pharmacology
Capsaicin selectively activates certain groups of unmyelinated primary
afferent sensory neurons (type “C”). Many of cayenne's positive effects on
the cardiovascular system can be attributed to its excitation of a distinct
population of these neurons in the vagus nerve. Topically, capsaicin is
reportedly effective in postherpetic neuralgia, postmastectomy pain syndrome
, osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, painful diabetic neuropathy, psoriasis,
and pruritus. Both the gastric and duodenal mucosa are thought to contain
capsaicin-sensitive areas that protect against acid- and drug-induced ulcers
when stimulated by capsaicin. It increases mucosal blood flow and/or
vascular permeability. Capsaicin may inhibit gastric motility and may
activate duodenal motility.
Theoretical Cautions and Contraindications
Use with caution in individuals with GI ulceration (based on case reports).
Due to pharmacologic activity, may interfere with MAO inhibitors and
antihypertensive therapies due to increased catecholamine secretion (Newall,
1996).
General Warnings
Use all herbal supplements with extreme caution in children <2 years of age
and in pregnancy or lactation. Some herbs are contraindicated in pregnancy
or lactation; make sure to observe warnings. Use with caution in individuals
on medication and with pre-existing medical conditions. Always review for
potential herb-drug interactions (HDIs) and other warnings. Large and
prolonged doses may increase the potential for adverse effects. Herbs may
cause transient adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, and GI distress
due to a variety of chemical constituents. Use caution in individuals having
known allergies to plants.
Theoretical Interactions
Anticoagulant medications (including warfarin), aspirin or aspirin-
containing products, NSAIDs, antiplatelet agents (eg, ticlopidine,
clopidogrel, dipyridamole); antihypertensives; MAO inhibitors; angiotensin
converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI); theophylline, cocaine
Dental Health: Effects on Bleeding
None reported
Dental Health: Vasoconstrictor/Local Anesthetic Precautions
No information available to require special precautions

Hot Stuff!
Chile peppers spice up your food, health and running.
Add Nutritional Punch
Richly colored chiles are packed with a range of antioxidants, including vit
amin A and vitamin C. These nutrients may aid in recovery and help stave off
ailments such as Alzheimer's disease and cancer.
Aid Weight Loss
Peppers get their spice from capsaicin, an antioxidant compound that boosts
heat production in the body, burning an extra 10 to 50 calories a day. Other
studies have found the compound can suppress your appetite and help you los
e more belly fat.
Reduce Diabetes Risk
Excess insulin (a hormone that moves carbs into muscle and fat cells) is a h
allmark in people with the onset of type 2 diabetes. Research shows eating a
chile pepper-spiced meal can lower your insulin response and improve blood-
sugar levels.
Dampen Muscle Pain
Many muscle rubs contain capsaicin. The compound's nerve-stimulating effect
alleviates pain when applied topically. Some research also shows that ingest
ing capsaicin helps calm inflamed muscles.
Fast Food
Tasty chile-pepper dishes ready in 20 minutes or less
