south was on its way to a capitalist / free market society, business was the
norm of life. The north on the other hand, was much more influenced by
politics and various wars, and the development was much slower. After the
communists took power, they built their industrial base mostly in the north
and west, in areas that were relatively backward and poor. Over the years
the economy of the northern cities were largely supported by the state owned
factories, and thus politics has far more grip on people's life. The south,
on the other hand, was largely left as it was. Nationalization of private
business during 1950s has not build significant new industries and the
industry in the south are mostly the so called "light industry" and small
businesses. This gave the south an advantage when Deng started his economic
reform in the early 1980s. The result was that a wealthy middle class first
emerged in southern costal provinces, and the economy there is much more
free market than communism. It is well known that a free market is not
compatible with government control, which adds political risk (
uncertainty) to the market. For this reason, people in the south are more
likely to be anti-communists and pro-democracy. |
