“"A farmer depends on himself, and the land and the weather. If you're a farmer, you raise what you eat, you raise what you wear, and you keep warm with wood out of your own timber. You work hard, but you work as you please, and no man can tell you to go or come. You'll be free and independent, son, on a farm."
”Almanzo squirmed....[he] did not want to live inside walls and please people。。。 He wanted to be just like Father.“

American agriculture is heavily subsidized. w/o government support it will
be a totally different picture.

“Large” commercial farm households (farms with annual sales greater than $
250,000) obtained nearly 70% of household income on-farm and accounted for
80% of the value of total U.S. agricultural production in 2009, while
representing only about 10% of farm households.
Intermediate family farms (farms with annual sales in excess of $10,000 but
less than $250,000)obtained about 4% of household income from on-farm
sources, accounted for about 18% of the value of total U.S. agricultural
production, and represented about 30% of family farms.
“Small” farm households (annual sales less than $10,000) actually lost
revenue from farming operations (-13% of household income) and accounted for
less than 2% of the value of total U.S.agricultural production in 2009,
while representing over 60% of farm households. A substantial number of
these small farms are classified as rural residence farms and either receive
little or no income from farm sources or have a total income level that
qualifies them as limited-resource farms.

Just saw that there are many resources to assist people to start their own
agribusiness in America:

One of the model you could have used in China is by using American's
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model: Finding like-minded people to
invest in an organic farm, then distribute the food to them. I truly
believe that this could be a successful model.
If you ever become successful in this model, remember to treat me with the
fresh food. :)

Here is a case study and success story:
When Noah Scalin moved back to Richmond after living in New York, he looked
around for something like the organic food delivery service he had
appreciated up north. "When I didn't find it, I started calling around to
farmers and seeing if they were interested in starting something. In the
process, I learned about CSAs." Eventually, Scalin teamed up with Phillips
Organic Farm to create SPROUT, which provides members with weekly deliveries
of seasonal fruit and vegetables, as well as eggs, from May to October.
Regular shares are $516, and work shares are $258 plus a monthly volunteer
contribution. After three successful years, SPROUT shares for 2004 have all
been taken, but you can call to be added to the waiting list for 2005. In
the meantime, try out SPROUT produce at Ellwood Thompson's, which has a
corporate share. Noah Scalin, 321-6677, i**[email protected]
