抗震顾问（非板板也）。

中国大陆承揽了大量的high-rise office building。但在此次汶川地震中却一毛不拔
。偶可是气坏了，正所谓：“道不同，不相为谋”（《论语•卫灵公》），偶已
经决定离开弯曲，另谋高就了。
Anyway，偶对弯曲及弯曲人民还是很有感情的，毕竟在这里生活了四年。因此，偶竞选
三藩版抗震顾问，义务为弯曲人民的抗震事业出点力。先show一下偶的credential：偶

最后，预测一下the Big One的epicenter, 想必是去年（10/30/07）的Magnitude 5.4
event near Alum Rock处无疑，因为this event (/30/07 Magnitude 5.4 event near
Alum Rock)，将弯曲最危险的Hayward fault （现在处于150年的窗口期）与另一条大
致沿I-680走向的Calaveras fault连在一起。不过，南湾鬼谷的同学大可放心，大部分
鬼谷的office buildings都不太高，且不少是1995年后建造的。再加上大部分鬼谷的
single family houses也是1995年后建造的，均符合1995年发布的新抗震规范的要求。
只是在最危险的是三藩及Oakland的Downtown的high-rise office buildings上班的各
位，小心驶得万年船，take care.

A moderate earthquake and at least one aftershock rattled the San Francisco
Bay Area this afternoon and was felt from San Jose to Berkeley to San
Francisco.
Here at Surge Desk's West Coast bureau in the East Bay, the quake caused
computer monitors to sway and floorboards to creak.
The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of the initial quake at 4.1,
with aftershocks registering 2.6 and 2.1. The epicenter for the quake, which
occurred at 4:16 p.m., was 10 miles east of Seven Trees, Calif.
By local standards, the quake was not at all serious, and compared to the
1989 Loma Prieta quake it felt like something of a kiddie ride. Still, we
must admit, provided for a bit of adrenaline.
So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

是要搞消防楼梯的位置，一发生地震，尽快到消防楼梯往下走，因为消防楼梯均位于核
心筒，是全楼最为坚固之处也。

Hayward, Calaveras faults may be connected, geologist says

Earth scientists have long branded the Hayward Fault the Bay Area's
deadliest, where a truly "Big One" is inevitable at some unforeseen time.
But new seismic research indicates that the Hayward and its neighboring
fault, the Calaveras, might be connected underground to make them, in effect
, a single and even more dangerous fault.
A research geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park reported on
the research during the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in
San Francisco on Tuesday. Evidence of creep and microquakes too tiny to be
felt on both faults, said Russell Graymer, makes it appear that the Hayward
and Calaveras are joined as a single fault less than four miles beneath the
surface.
In an interview, Graymer said: "The evidence is clear that the two faults
are just a single entity and could generate an earthquake two to four times
larger than the one that hit the southern segment of the Hayward in 1868."
That famed and deadly temblor has been given a magnitude of 7, and by "two
to four times larger," Graymer meant that a large quake on either one of
what are now called separate faults could register a magnitude of 7.2 to 7.4
, he said.
The possibility, however, is by no means a certainty, according to other
earthquake scientists.
William Ellsworth, a geophysicist and member of the Geological Survey's
National Earthquake Prediction and Evaluation Council, is familiar with
Graymer's contention and cautioned that "like many scientific models, it
needs to be tested."
The historical evidence, Ellsworth said, does show that, since the 1970s,
small earthquakes with parallel epicenters have occurred regularly along
both the southern segment of the Hayward Fault and the northern segment of
the Calaveras. But he said many of them - particularly those on the
Calaveras - have shown no evidence of fault rupture on the surface.
Underground, the two faults could be linked by what seismic specialists call
the Mission Trend, Ellsworth said, but there is no surface evidence of any
earthquake activity linking them, he said.
"Most of us call it a trend between the faults," he said, "but some would
call it a fault."
To illustrate the theory, five of Graymer's colleagues, including Carl
Wentworth of the Geological Survey, have developed a three-dimensional model
of the junction where the Hayward and Calaveras faults meet and have
concluded that "deep seismicity suggests a simple connection between the
southern Hayward and the central Calaveras."
Another researcher, Eileen Evans, a first-year graduate student working at
UC Berkeley's Seismological Laboratory, said her study of surface creep
along both faults makes it "very likely" that the Calaveras "directly
transfers some of its creeping motion to the Hayward fault and that the
southern Hayward may "dip into and merge with the northern Calaveras" south
of Fremont.
Thomas Brocher, a Geological Survey quake expert who is leading an effort to
convince Bay Area residents that the Hayward fault's dangers are clear,
called Graymer's idea that the Hayward and the Calaveras are linked "very
interesting."
"It's kind of hard to argue with it," he said.
Whether or not Graymer's theory is correct, there's no doubt that scientists
are increasingly focusing their attention on the Hayward Fault's dangers,
and the evidence was made clear at the AGU meeting in Moscone Center, where
19 full-scale presentations on the Hayward and Calaveras faults were
presented Tuesday to packed audiences.
"Many of us living and working in the Bay Area are thinking more and more
about the Hayward Fault and its danger these days," Ellsworth noted.

恐慌，到底除了中国位在地震带上，世界各地还有哪些地方是地震的高危险地区，美国
会发生地震吗？近期4月28日美国中西部也发生一起芮氏规模5.4地震，虽没有伤亡传出
，但是美国中西部过去很少发生地震，也让许多美国人感到紧张。更让人担心的是美国
地质研究所The US Geological Survey，USGS中的一群美国地震专家，发表的一份地震
预测报告指出，未来三十年内，南加州地区“极有可能”发生一次超级大地震。
美国最近一次的大型有感地震是发生在中西部，包括印第安纳、肯塔基、伊利诺、密苏
里和阿肯色州都感受到这起地震，地震规模约是芮氏规模5.4，尔后又发生模4.5的余震
，所幸没有人员伤亡。由于美国中西部过去很少发生地震，伊利诺伊州上次发生规模5.
4地震，是在1968年，让人担心是不是美国其它位在地震带上的区域会爆发规模更大的
地震。
事实上，美国地质调查局和南加州大学地震研究中心的专家，在四月中旬就联合发布一
项有关地震的研究预测，预测报告指出30年内，也就是2037年左右，差不多会发生强力
大地震。南加州发生类似1994年洛杉矶北岭里氏6.7级大地震的可能性高达97%，北加州
发生类似地震的可能性也高达93%；而同一时期，南印第安纳发生7.5大地震的可能性高
达37%，北加州有15%的机率。这次负责研究这项研究报告的费德Ned Field直言：基本
上这个预测应该是会发生。研究还显示，加州平均每5年就会发生一次像1994年北岭6.7
级般的地震，而那样的强震发生在洛杉矶盆地的机率为67%，发生在旧金山湾区为63%。
旧金山数字与2003年分析所得的62%相差不远。
报告还明确指出，南加州河滨县以东的圣安德烈斯断层带(San Andreas Fault)，风险
度最高，南部断层带30年内发生6.7级或更强烈地震的机率达59%，且最不稳定。一旦真
的发生大地震，预估所释放的震波能量将可平行移动超过上百哩，连圣地亚哥也会受创
。同是圣安德烈斯断层带，北部段落遇强震的机率是21%。至于拥有大量华裔的湾区，
未来发生6.7级地震机率为31%。
费德说，当加州发生大地震发生时，一般老百性的民宅，由于多是木造房屋，抗震系数
仅为6.5级左右，抗震能力将受到严酷挑战。加上许多平房屋龄已高，结构年久失修，
更具危险性。
地震中心主任佐敦Thomas H. Jordan表示，现在美国地震局采用国家地图局的卫星定位
GPS系统，可监控加州所有断层的3D实时动向，加上各断层都实地安置了超过上百个地
震数据发报器，最后再结合过去300年来的地震历史数据，分都析将比往年还要精准。
如果有任何不正常的状况出现，会马上通报民众，这几年加州发生的多是轻微的无感地
震。
不过地震中心也提醒民众，应该学习在地震中如何保护自己，并且知道逃生，如有问题
可上www.earthquake.usgs.gov查询。此外，住在加州的民众也可利用旧金山市政府设
立的www.72hours.org网站，为地震最好准备。

弯曲的老房子大都是平房，又是木头的，地政的话死人应该不多。最危险的hayword
fault好像靠近mission san jose, 南边的cupertino 和地政带稍微远点，这是不是也
是南湾房子贵点原因之一？ 上次本想看看foster city的房子，网上有人说那里是填海
造田的，地震的话要掉到海里去的，马上放弃了。哪位老弯曲出来说说上次大地震弯曲

7/30/08灌的，当时偶主要从事海外（中国、中东、欧洲）的超高层设计，与鬼谷的同
学接触不多。有几个同学住在近10/30/07的Magnitude 5.4 epicenter Alum Rock的west
San Jose，他们的single family houses均是2000年后建造的。因此偶当时以为大部分鬼谷
的single family houses也是1995年后建造的。
最近两年偶主要从事弯曲本地的多层及single family houses设计，与鬼谷的同学接触
很多。这才惊觉原来鬼谷的single family houses几乎90%以上是1995年前建造的。So
if you have room over garage,and your house was built before 1995, you
should consider seismic elevation and/or seismic retrofit at some time.
