Indeed, multiple offers and above-asking prices have become the norm
throughout the Bay Area, at least for entry-level and midrange homes
generally below $1 million, real-estate brokers say. That is making for some
happy sellers. "It was a beautiful thing," Dan Whalen, 53 years old, a
financial executive from Seattle and executor of the Noe Valley home left by
the death of an uncle, says of his family's windfall.
The market has become tougher for buyers, however. Cindy Foreman, a Keller
Williams Realty agent in Danville, says traditional buyers like a young
couple seeking their first home are being outbid by investors who often
offer all cash. "It's almost impossible for an entry-level buyer to compete,
" Ms. Foreman says, before driving to a for-sale home that fetched multiple
offers in San Ramon.
